NETWORKING

The New Year is now underway so new goals and resolutions, new plans, new dreams and new directions fuel your thoughts. One of the best ways to achieve your goals and resolutions is to continue to build your network.

Ask any senior executive, politician, community leader or successful business owner which one skill or habit helped them excel in their career – an overwhelming majority will respond with one simple word… “Networking”.

Networking is about making connections and building enduring, mutually beneficial relationships.

One of the most obvious advantages of business networking is that it can help us find new customers. Building a rapport with others who may need what you have to offer can help build your customer base. If you needed a product or service, wouldn't you prefer to go to someone you know and trust if that were an option?

Even those who have no need for what we have to offer can bring us business. They have their own network of contacts, and there's a good probability that they know someone who could use your goods or services. Even if they do not, they might meet someone some day who does, and when that time comes, they will know who to recommend. It is estimated that anywhere from 50-80% of business is generated from networking and word of mouth. You should identify ways and means to improve your networking. You should view networking and relationship building as a continuous process. Networking aids the growth of your business and expands your own personal horizon. Look up colleagues with whom you have lost touch. Make sure you attend at least one professional meeting each month. You will benefit from the friendships and relationships you develop from active participation. It is not enough to “join.” You need to participate to reap the rewards.

It is all about relationships. Build them and keep them strong. Working together is much easier than going it alone. Often it’s not what you know, but WHO you know!
