Edmonton Named Most Sociable City in North America
The Responsible Hospitality Institute has named Edmonton the most Sociable City in North America. The award recognizes Edmonton’s success in creating a safe and vibrant nightlife.
Edmonton’s innovative marketing campaigns, partnerships between government and businesses, the Public Safety Compliance Team and other city services were highlighted in awarding the honour to the city. The award acknowledges the city’s work in its 13 different entertainment districts, which include Whyte Avenue in Old Strathcona, West Edmonton Mall, and downtown.
“We’re honoured for the recognition and proud to work closely with our many partners in the industry, community and government. Our work through Responsible Hospitality Edmonton (RHE) definitely contributes to Edmonton’s renowned high quality of life,” said Angela Turner, RHE Project Coordinator.
“The cities that received awards are outstanding models for planning and managing nightlife. Their city leaders are at the forefront of innovation for harnessing dining and entertainment as an economic engine to drive revitalization and increase city funds,” said RHI president Jim Peters.
Edmonton has become the go-to city for others to learn about safely managing entertainment districts. RHE was invited to the New York Regional Forum where cities like Boston, Philadelphia and New York examined Edmonton’s successful strategies. The City of Pittsburgh also consulted Edmonton to learn how it successfully evolved the management of the Whyte Avenue area in Old Strathcona.
Other major North American cities competing with Edmonton for the coveted title included:
Long Beach, Santa Rosa, Livermore and San Jose, California,
Gainesville and West Palm Beach, Florida
Seattle, Washington
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The City of Edmonton created RHE to plan, manage and police 13 hospitality and entertainment district zones throughout the city to support community development, revitalization, safety and economic development.
The first Sociable City Awards were recently presented in Austin, Texas. Criteria to determine the top sociable city focused on safety and vibrancy to encourage partnerships, proactive compliance education and training, public space entertainment, multi-cultural and/or multi-generational activities and public services supporting an active nightlife.

A New Destination Marketing Dynamic
Jasper, Alberta: 2010 will be an exciting year of transformation for destination Jasper
Working in partnership Jasper Tourism and Commerce & Jasper Destination Marketing Corporation have laid the groundwork for organizational change.
Jasper Destination Marketing Corporation has been working diligently over the last two years to create a Destination Marketing Fund to increase our marketing capability for this world class authentic, mountain community.
As a joint working group, Jasper Tourism & Commerce and Jasper Destination Marketing Corporation signed a letter of intent on November 27th, 2009 to start the collaboration required to develop:
- A Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations
- A new Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) which will be called Tourism Jasper
- A stakeholder communication plan
We are pleased to announce that effective January 4th, 2010 under Maggie Davison’s direction as CEO, and with the support of both organizations, the team began working together to complete the transition and evolve the new organization as it begins the development and management of the future funding and marketing activity for the destination.
According to Maggie Davison, “This amazing collaborative effort is reflective of the dedication, commitment and determination of the Jasper business community to work in partnership and create a solid, well funded foundation that will allow us to showcase Jasper as an authentic rocky mountain experience to Canada and the world. We look forward to working with each of our partners as this new organization transitions from vision to reality.”
The team’s location will be the historic “Robson House” located at 409 Patricia St. in Jasper and the main telephone number will be (780) 852 3858.
Jasper town site is located in Jasper National Park, one of Canada’s 15 extraordinary sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List – deemed by the World Heritage Committee to number among the most significant sights on earth.
Vote for Edmonton's place on the Monopoly Canada board!
Hasbro Canada is developing a new version of Monopoly based on Canadian cities. Edmonton is one of the 65 cities in the running for the 20 places on the game board. The cities that are going to make into the game are being determined by a public vote that started January 11 and continues to February 21, 2010. Calgary Mayor Bronconnier issued a public appeal to the citizens of Calgary to get the vote out and Calgary has shot into the top 3 in the voting. Edmonton currently sits below 20th place which means that Edmonton would not be in the game. You can vote once a day until the 21st of February. Please go to www.monopolyvote.ca to register and vote! Let's make sure that Edmonton gets on the board!
