Message from the Vice-President of Economic & Tourism Development

Edmonton hosts the world year round. From conferences to business meetings, our venues, attractions and facilities welcome visitors and residents alike to Alberta’s capital city.

Our city’s warm and generous hospitality positions us well to host international marquee sporting and cultural events. Past gatherings like the 2009 Roar of the Rings Olympics qualifier and 2008 World Canoe Polo Championships. Future events like this fall’s Canadian Country Music Awards and 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships, to name just two.

Behind every successful bid is a legion of dedicated, passionate and civic-minded citizens who labour tirelessly to attract these events to our city. Edmonton Tourism, through a working group called Edmonton Events International, works with these individuals, sporting groups and other bodies to put together winning bid strategies and packages.

Coming up is the bid for what could be the largest event Edmonton has ever hosted: EXPO 2017. The tourism industry will be tested like it has never been, but I know we will rise to the occasion. I am equally confident about our city’s chances because all those international events we have hosted have an incremental effect: it shows voters who will ultimately decide on our bid that we have a tested, spectacular track record of welcoming the world, built on a sophisticated and responsive tourism industry.

In a world that has never been more connected, events like these give Edmonton an edge in the international marketplace. It promotes Edmonton as a destination for visitors, investors and new residents alike, consistent with our declared goal of being one of the world’s top five mid-sized cities.
