What a great pleasure to be kicking off a new decade with the Edmonton Capital Region Tourism Partnership! The 11th Annual General Meeting held in late January was a huge success. Partners were introduced to the new chair of Travel Alberta, Quincy Smith, as well as Honourable Cindy Ady, Alberta Minister of Tourism. Discussions about the world-wide softening market are a concern but data shows that Alberta’s $5.6 billion tourism industry is still healthy. Minister Ady noted that January through November of 2008, Alberta’s overnight direct entries only decreased less than one per cent over the previous year. This was encouraging news considering Canada’s overall decrease was 4.8 per cent. |

Now is the ideal time to strengthen Greater Edmonton’s competitive advantage through environmentally friendly practices. Sustainability is not a value-added practice anymore. It is a necessity. Environmental responsibility is increasingly important to the business and leisure traveller and this is our opportunity to exceed the tourism industry standards. We have to go way beyond asking hotel guests to avoid wasting clean towels.
Edmonton Tourism is also working to incorporate sustainable practices. We used paper-less registration, re-usable sugar and milk containers and lanyard-style, multi-use name tags at the last AGM. Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre (SCC) has become a green leader in the community. The Simple steps program lets meeting planners organize environmentally friendly conferences. SCC’s organic waste and recycling initiatives reduced their garbage disposal by 40 per cent in 2008.
The opportunities are endless, including using locally grown foods, planting shrubs, purchasing recycled paper, using energy efficient light bulbs . . . .
I’m encouraging all partners to work together, take a lead and begin a green revolution in 2009.
