Meetings and Business Travel

2009 started off with a bang for our Meetings and Business Travel department. Glenn Duncan, Managing Director, Tourism Development, began our busy year ahead with his participation in the 2009 Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) Annual Conference from January 11-14, 2009. This year’s event was in New Orleans and was attended by over 3,000 delegates. Glenn also attended VIP events with the Canadian Tourism Commissions (CTC) as well as Travel Alberta, and was introduced to 10 new US accounts that will be pursued for future business.

January ended with our full team of managers being set in place and an official re-alignment of markets. Glenn Duncan, Managing Director, Tourism Development, will handle the Eastern US markets with a focus on Washington, DC and surrounding areas. Brent Beatty (Photo), Sr. Manager, Business Travel is our newest member and will handle the Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and US Mid West markets. Crystal DeCosta, Sales Manager, Business Travel will concentrate her efforts on Western Canada as well as the United States. Mike Miller, Coordinator Meetings and Event Services, has shown true professionalism in dealing with all of our valued clients in 2008 and he will be asked to work in more of a sales role in the coming year while continuing to support our groups coming into the city. Michelle Jameson, Sales Coordinator, will continue to support our team and be the corner stone of our team’s communications. Nancy Holowaty will continue to assist us all in her split role with the meetings team and film attraction.

Moving forward in 2009, please keep in mind two of our many partnership opportunities. First is our Super Summer Solstice Site Visit in June, and second is our annual MOTTO sales mission in November. Both initiatives offer an excellent opportunity for partners to meet key association, government and corporate meeting planners. We hope to see you involved.

Crystal DeCosta attended the 2009 MPI MeetDifferent Conference in Atlanta, Georgia from February 7-10. Partnering with Travel Alberta International, Edmonton Tourism shared a booth during the MeetDifferent Expo and was able to connect with 25 qualified meeting planners. Other components included various educational sessions and a Canadian dinner, attended by approximately 50 Canadians meeting planners and suppliers partaking in the conference.

Brent Beatty Sr. Manager, Business Travel
We’re very pleased to welcome Brent Beatty to our team as Sr. Manager of Business Travel.

Brent has extensive experience in the tourism / hospitality industry and is a proven leader in his field. With a very successful sales background, Brent's client relations and respect among his peers are to be envied. We look forward to working with Brent and the special touch he will bring to this important position. bbeatty@edmonton.com
