Message from the Vice-President of Economic & Tourism Development

Last year, we saw the widely anticipated Winter Light Festival grace our winter season. Its inaugural year was a great success and I am delighted to see it return as an integral part of this year's winter programming.

The festival proudly showcases Edmonton as the beautiful, interesting northern city, it really is. It offers a vibrant essence to the long, urban winter and celebrates it in a way only Canada’s Festival City can. Winter Light runs from January 6 to March 13. Here are just a few of the outstanding 2010 Winter Light events.

Mispon Winter Light Gala - January 6

Winter Light kicks off at City Hall with Mispon, a whimsical gala featuring fun installations, performances and presentations. A light-hearted celebration of our snowy winter city, Mispon means ‘it’s snowing’ in Cree.

Deep Freeze - January 9-10

Enjoy the enchanted ice and snow garden, outdoor curling, skating, hayrides, and the Melt the Deep Freeze dance party. Winter Light 2010 collaborates with Deep Freeze to present daily shows of an outdoor theatre Mummery, plus story telling in the tipis and free hot chocolate. www.artsontheave.org

Ice on Whyte - January 14-24

Ice on Whyte is Edmonton’s pre-eminent ice festival, with dozens of carvers creating a dazzling installation of frozen sculpture. The atmosphere is family friendly, with an amazing ice castle, and a thrilling ice slide. The festival presents both local and international carvers who compete for prizes, and host workshops for “little chippers”.

Silver Skate - February 19-21

A unique blend of art, recreation and sport, Silver Skate includes Night Works in the Park, skate marathons, the Winter Triathlon, the Snow Sculpture Garden, and lots of free family programming.

Star Party - March 6

Enjoy the beauty and mystery of the celestial lights at Elk Island National Park. Astronomers and telescopes offer a brilliant view of the stars from a unique dark sky preserve. Activities include traditional story telling, and a red-light parade along Astotin Lake. The Star Party offers campfires, hot chocolate and free shuttles from downtown.

To learn more please visit: www.winterlight.ca. Let's show visitors how unique and vibrant our way of life is. I urge you to visit www.winterlight.ca and be sure to let your family, friends and clients know all about the wonderful events taking place. Winter Light has been a welcome addition to the more than 30 major festivals Edmonton hosts each year, and I’m delighted that we can add such an exceptional event to our winter product.

MeetingsEasy Tips for Partners

  • If you are attaching a proposal for an RFP which has requested both meeting space and guest rooms please attach it to both categories. This allows the planner to have access to your proposal at any time.

  • Please always complete the guest room matrix even if the information is found in an attached document. This allows the planner to see peak room and rate information quickly. This includes changing the number of rooms on the left side to reflect the number of rooms you can offer as well as the rate.

  • Read the comments section carefully for any special instructions. This may include filling out a particular form or sending the client specific information.
