NEW CULTURAL JEWEL TO OPEN!
On January 31, 2010, the new Art Gallery of Alberta will open its doors with a two-day opening celebration. The opening of this $88 million world-class facility completes a twelve-year effort to design and construct an engaging and inviting visual arts centre in downtown Edmonton. The new Art gallery of Alberta will be a centre of excellence for the visual arts expressing the creative spirit of Alberta. The building’s unique design by architect Randall Stout was inspired by the juxtaposition of Edmonton’s urban grid system against the winding North Saskatchewan River. The gallery in itself is a work of art that complements and completes the cultural precinct surrounding Churchill Square and solidifies Edmonton as a world-class city.
The new 85,000 square foot Art Gallery of Alberta will feature many improvements over the previous gallery. First, it will have dedicated gallery space for the Art Gallery of Alberta’s permanent collection of over 6,000 works of art. Second, it almost doubles the size of its exhibition spaces from 16,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet. These innovative galleries will allow the Art Gallery of Alberta to present national and international exhibitions. Third, it will feature the Singhmar Centre for Art Education. This education centre featuring 3 studio classrooms and an education gallery greatly expands the educational capabilities at the art gallery. The ability to attract national and international exhibits combined with the Singhmar Centre for Art Education will make the Art Gallery of Alberta a premier presentation venue for international and Canadian art, education and scholarship.

The Art Gallery of Alberta will also feature a new gift shop and restaurant. The gift shop, shopAGA, will provide items unique to Edmonton including distinctive jewelery, home décor, art publications, and exhibition-inspired products. The 75-seat full service restaurant, Zinc, will feature a menu that focuses on the highest quality artisanal ingredients with particular emphasis on ingredients that are local, seasonal, and sustainable. There will also be two kiosk espresso bars: the Terrace Café located on the third floor, and LL1 Espresso located on the lower level.
The ability of the new Art Gallery of Alberta to attract national and international exhibits is perfectly exemplified by the inaugural exhibitions to the gallery. These inaugural exhibitions are:

- Edgar Degas: Figures in Motion: This exhibition explores one of the most fascinating aspects of the work of the renowned 19th century painter and sculptor Edgar Degas. Degas' innovative compositions, skillful drawing and perceptive analysis of movement have made him one of the masters of late nineteenth-century French art, and one of the most known names in modern art history.

- Francisco Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos: This exhibition features Francisco Goya's infamous print suites: Los Caprichos (1799) and The Disasters of War (1810-1820). Created on the eve of the close of the 18th century, Los Caprichos focuses on themes related to the Spanish Inquisition, the abuses of the church and the nobility, witchcraft, avarice, and represents Goya's critique of the social, cultural, religious world of the day. The Disasters of War, created by Goya only a decade later, documents the brutality of the Peninsular War and the atrocities that mankind inflicts upon itself. Together these two bodies of work have come to be seen as the most influential graphic series in the history of Western art.

- Karsh: Image Maker: This is a major exhibition that marks the centenary of one of Canada's most eminent portrait photographers. The exhibition provides a fresh and dynamic approach to the work of Yousuf Karsh, a multifaceted photographer, whose life, influence and work have created an enduring legacy.
- The Murder of Crows by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: This exhibition is the North American premier of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Millers installation: The Murder of Crows, their largest sound installation to date. The work has been shown in Sydney, Berlin and Brazil, but comes to Canadian audiences for the first time as part of the AGA's opening exhibitions. The work will occupy the entire third floor of the new Art Gallery of Alberta. Consisting of 98 speakers, The Murder of Crows is a complex interweaving of voice, music and sound that have generated a profound physical impact on the listener. The work has been conceived in acts, but one whose images and narratives structures are created by sound alone. The three-part work, composed in collaboration with Freida Abtan, Tilman Ritter and Titus Maderlechner, is 30 minutes in duration.
