It's a bird...It's a plane...It's SuperNet!

|
|
Able to deliver information faster than a speeding bullet, able to connect tall buildings in a single bundle of cables, the SuperNet is a high bandwidth network that connects various Alberta government agencies and ministries and provides affordable, high-speed Internet access to 429 communities across the province.
When the Alberta government went searching for an organization to train stakeholders on this new technology, they turned to NAIT. "NAIT has long been at the cutting-edge of new uses of technology, including e-learning, distance education and video conferencing. This is another impressive step forward for NAIT," says Advanced Education Minister Dave Hancock.
NAIT took up the challenge, and has been offering SuperNet courses since June 2004. So far, more than 400 IT professionals and other SuperNet stakeholders have benefited from the training. Course offerings include a SuperNet technical overview, introductory and advanced Supernet design and implementation, and video-conferencing using SuperNet. A VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) course is planned, and the next set of offerings will focus on instruction for end-users, teachers and professors for example, on how to effectively use the technology.

NAIT builds futures everywhere.

NAIT is proud of its long track record of making a difference for organizations and individuals through training programs, regardless of the location. We regularly work with thousands of participants in myriad environments, but one program stands out as particularly rewarding for all involved.
Recently, NAIT partnered with Correctional Services Canada, endorsing an inmate training program at the Bowden Correctional Institution, designed to give inmates career skills in order to increase their chances of being successful following their service. The inmates worked on framing construction skills, and were provided with valuable experience working as framers on Habitat for Humanity homes. The program not only provided skills to the inmates, but also assisted Habitat for Humanity with their mission to help eradicate homelessness - a win-win for all involved. At the end of the program, eight inmates received a NAIT certificate in framing, drastically improving their chances of a successful re-integration to society. As Jason Gallant, one of the program participants, puts it, "It's guaranteed me a job, a good wage - everything is up to me now."
