EDMONTON PLAYS HOST TO INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS - ICLEI 2009

Globally, we are starting to see a positive shift on environmental issues as we move past the point of questioning whether we have an issue, towards discussion about what we can and must do to protect our environment.

That's why the City of Edmonton was so pleased to host the ICLEI 2009 World Congress, June 14-18. ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) is an international association of municipal governments that have made a commitment to sustainable development - balancing the City's growth and development needs, with the need to protect the natural environment.

The focus is on the impact of cities - and there is no question that how we live, how we build, plan, move, work and dispose of waste needs to be under the microscope because the majority of pollutants come from cities and cities can have the greatest impact on progress.

It was truly an honour to host the 625 delegates from more 50 countries who came to Edmonton for the ICLEI World Congress. We were able to learn from and share ideas with our fellow municipalities and had the opportunity to show off some of Edmonton's best to the delegates. I look forward to the collective effort of all cities to improve our environment through ICLEI. And I am confident that together, we will achieve our goals and make environmental sustainability a reality.

EDMONTON STORIES

Research conducted in July 2008 showed us that the Edmonton experience IS what people look for and value in a place to live or visit.

The issue is that people outside our city don't know about us, and the perception they have isn't accurate. In short, we have an awareness problem.

So in response to these findings, the City launched edmontonstories.ca; a campaign designed to build awareness of Edmonton.

To build awareness we're going to uncover the essence of Edmonton through the experience of Edmontonians.

So we are collaborating with Edmontonians to help describe the essence of our city. We'll collect their stories and then share them with the world.

We believe the intimacy of our stories will have a profound and powerful impact. Our stories will reflect what Edmonton has to offer and what it is that makes Edmonton extraordinary.

Tell us your personal story that really illustrates what Edmonton means to you at edmontonstories.ca.

POET LAUREATE

Poet, writer and hip hop artist, Roland (Rollie) Pemberton, aka Cadence Weapon, will become Edmonton's third Poet Laureate beginning July 1st. Rollie will serve a 2 year term.

I believe Rollie will bring poetry to a whole new audience, and challenge the rest of us on our conventional perception of what it means to be a poet. We want young Edmontonians to be involved in shaping our City. I know Rollie Pemberton will be a great Edmonton ambassador to the rest of the world.
