Capital City Clean Up has a very successful summer.

This summer, the City's Capital City Clean Up program was a great success!

Thank you to the 5000 + Edmontonians who collected over 700 bags of garbage in our neighborhoods and river valley and the 1500 + students from 38 schools who joined CCCU to keep our schools yards and neighborhoods litter free.

I'm also pleased to say that participation by property owners (residential and commercial) in the 2009 Commercial Cleaning program for graffiti has tripled over 2008 and continues to grow.

Cleaning up our neighbourhoods is about inspiring pride in our communities and enhancing Edmonton's livability by making sure the streets are attractive, clean and safe, and I thank Edmontonians for their commitment!

Keeping Edmonton Clean: City Targets Cigarette Butt Litter

Did you know that cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world? Cigarette litter is not only unpleasant and unattractive, it's also terrible for the environment... 80% of the butts make their way into our water system and they build up on our streets... anyone who has tried to pick them up knows how hard they are to clean.

As Mayor, one of the biggest issues I hear from citizens is about keeping our city clean. This is why we launched the Capital City Clean Up program, to bring the City and community together on this important priority. Cigarette butts are the latest focus for this thriving program.

Cigarette litter is not a new thing, but as smoking is banned in work places and public buildings, smokers are outside and leaving their cigarette butts behind in growing numbers. So we've looked for ways to help eliminate the excuses.

A combination of pole-mounted and free standing ashtrays have been signed and placed at key locations. These resources will be supported by a city-wide public education campaign.

Capital City Clean Up has also given out hundreds of personal pocket ashtrays so butts never need to end up on the street.

Experience tells us that we can change bad habits through a combination of education and enforcement. It also shows that people are less likely to litter on an already clean street, so by concentrating on one problem, we can have spillover affect into reducing other forms of litter – something we all agree must happen.
