Budget 2010: Edmonton City Council Wants to Hear From You

Over the coming two weeks, I, along with members of Council, am hosting Town Hall meetings across the city to hear directly from Edmontonians about your 2010 budget priorities. Gathering Edmontonians' input is an important part of our budget process.

Council and Administration began work in February this year on development of a plan for the 2010 Operating Budget. Joint planning sessions were held in early 2009 that resulted in Council approving budget principles and setting targets for tax rate increases. Here are some highlights of the Draft 2010 Budget that I would like to share with you:
  • The Draft 2010 budget would result in a 3% tax rate increase for civic programs and boards and authorities (if Police Service reduced expenditures to meet their target), plus a 2% tax rate increase for the Neighbourhood Renewal Program

  • The Edmonton Police Commission proposes a 2010 Budget for the Edmonton Police Service to maintain existing services, which would raise the overall tax rate increase to 4.5% for services, plus the 2% for Neighbourhood Renewal

  • There is $9.5 million in one-time funding available for Council to allocate to unfunded service packages requiring one-time funding
It is our aim at Council to provide the best possible services for citizens balanced by a goal to maintain one of the most competitive tax jurisdictions in Canada. Please note the dates and locations and come out to join us.
