Season's Greetings from Mayor Stephen Mandel
Edmonton is a truly blessed city and Edmontonians have so much to be thankful for this holiday season.
But, while most of us will have a warm place to spend the holidays in the company of family and friends, not everyone in our community will be so fortunate; those with the greatest need will be most affected by the uncertainty in the global economy, especially our local charities who will rely on the generosity of our community more than ever.
Looking Forward: 2009
While 2009 is going to start in the midst of uncertainty, we know that we have strong fundamentals in terms of a strong resource base, low debt and ongoing investments in our infrastructure that will help our local economy to likely fare better than other regions.
I know that when I look ahead to 2009, I am very optimistic about our City and will be focused on working with my Council colleagues to be prudent in the short term so that we can continue to move forward with a number of long-term initiatives aimed at improving our City.
Here’s just a glimpse of what’s on our plates for 2009.
Plans for the Quarters and Boyle Renaissance, which will truly change the face of our City, will continue to unfold. We will continue to investigate the 2017 World’s Fair bid which will be a great opportunity for us to showcase Edmonton around the world. The finishing touches will be made to the Regional Growth Management Plan that will ensure a cohesive and efficient planning model for the Capital Region.
Our Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness will be available in late January and our Edmonton Taskforce on Community Safety will come forward with long term recommendations for ways we can prevent crime in our city. Each of these will help us more successfully approach some of the long standing issues in our communities.
There’s lots of work ahead, but now is the time to enjoy the company of family and friends. So in that spirit, I want to wish you:

Best wishes for the Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy 2009.
May the New Year bring you and your family joy and good fortune! |
