These programs are free of charge for qualifying applicants living in Manitoba with a Canadian Language Benchmark 7 or higher:
- English for Internationally Educated Accountants
- Language and Communication for Internationally Educated Agrologists
- English for Engineering Professionals
- Communication for Internationally Educated Teachers

ESL TCP
ESL TCP is a Teacher Certificate Program that is accredited by TESL Canada. This year, we have a couple of *new* things happening in the Teacher Certificate Program. Because our enrollment has been higher than ever, we are offering a winter session for the first time. We are also offering a part-time option in TCP.

Full-Time ELP
Academic News
The fall term for our full-time program has been very busy. We have over 190 students enrolled in twelve full-time classes in both the Academic and General Stream of the ELP program. Beginning this term Academic 5 students take “Introduction to Business I” at Main Campus in addition to their ELP courses. Academic 5 students now receive 3 unallocated credits hours and 3 business credit hours from The University of Winnipeg when they successfully complete their term.

A "Win-Win" Learning Experience
 |
|
On October 17th the General 4 students from the English Language Program paid a visit to Laura Secord Elementary School. They visited two Grade 3 classes to teach the children about their countries.
The ELP students came with colourful boards they had prepared and games and activities to do with the kids. Each General 4 group gave their presentation twice, so each group of students had the opportunity to learn about two different countries. There were presentations about Argentina, Russia, Korea, and Japan. |
It was a really wonderful experience to walk the halls of the school and see children playing "Chaji-chaji" (Korean "hackysack"), folding origami, or learning new soccer moves (Go! Go! San Lorenzo de Almagro!)
For the ELP students, it was not only an opportunity to practice their English and their presentation skills, but also to learn about Canadian school culture. Many of the Laura Secord students expressed surprise at the differences between a Canadian elementary school, and the types of schools the international students had attended as kids.
All in all, it was a culturally rich and educationally fulfilling experience for everyone involved. Thank-you very much to the students of General 4 and the teachers at Laura Secord.
Sharon Muldrew, Instructor, General 4
Socio-Cultural News
| It is hard to believe we are already halfway done our fall term. On Friday afternoons, we have been enjoying many of the sights and attractions around Winnipeg. To begin the term we started with a friendly game of bowling and the second week we travelled out of the city to Oak Hammock Marsh. There we enjoyed watching Canadian geese fly overhead, a nature walk, making bannock (and eating it too), and exploring the interpretive center (www.oakhammockmarsh.com). |

|
For our third activity we watched the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play football against the Edmonton Eskimos. The game kept us on the edge of our seats and the Blue Bombers ended up winning the game by a score of 30-23. Go Bombers Go! The Manitoba Museum (www.manitobamuseum.ca) was the next place we visited; we learned about Canada’s history, boarded the ‘Nonsuch’ ship, examined dinosaur bones, and explored various regions of Canada such as the Arctic and a Boreal Forest. Some students jumped when they peered into a dark cave to see a bear staring back at them! We won’t mention names though... |
On October 9th we had our Fall International Dinner at Main Campus. Students brought a dish of food from their country to share with the other students, instructors and staff. Dinner was delicious! After dinner we enjoyed student presentations from different countries. Latin dancing lessons also proved to be quite fun the week after the dinner. Students had fun learning new dance moves such as Salsa and Meringue.
| There are still many socio-cultural activities coming up this term. We will be going to main campus for a gym day at the Duckworth Center, enjoying a pizza dinner and watching The University of Winnipeg Wesman Basketball teams play, touring The Winnipeg Art Gallery (www.wag.mb.ca), taking in an IMAX show downtown Winnipeg, having lunch from the top of Winnipeg at the Crown Rotating Restaurant, and visiting Fort Gibraltar for a day of food and festivities (www.fortgibraltar.com). Graduation will be held on December 12th at Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall (main campus) at 10:00am. |

Homestay
 |
|
The University of Winnipeg has had an active and successful Homestay Family Program for many years. This program is a rich and rewarding cross-cultural experience for both the family and the international student. It provides international students studying at The University of Winnipeg with an excellent opportunity to use their English and allows students to experience Canadian life and culture. |
The main role of the host family is to provide our students with a friendly, safe and functional home environment where our students will be treated as a member of their family. At the same time our Canadian families benefit by learning about international students and their culture.
We currently have about 110 international students placed with about 80 different families. The students are really enjoying this experience and encouraged to use their English-speaking skills!
For more information please contact Adriana or Ingrid.

Language Partner Program
"I have met with my partner (English Language student) a few times now and it is going really well! It's a difficult adjustment for me to speak slower and use less slang or expressions only native-English speakers will understand. I am enjoying the challenge and I am learning more about Korea. It's more interesting to learn it from a person who lives there rather than a list of facts found in a guidebook. Meeting with my language partner is a highlight in my week and
I know that she appreciates my help!"
| Volunteer Language Partners help an international student by meeting with them to speak English outside of the classroom in a casual environment. The commitment is one hour a week for twelve weeks. It is a great way to learn about a new culture while helping a student improve their English skills! When a volunteer completes a term (12 hours) the University of Winnipeg will provide a reference letter for the volunteer. |

If YOU would like to be a language partner or know someone who would please contact j.sakuta@uwinnipeg.ca or 982-1151 or visit http://www.uwinnipeg.ca/index/elp-partner |
