Alumni Campaign to Support Scholarships and Bursaries

  The University of Winnipeg is committed to providing scholarships and bursaries that improve access to University education, encourage diversity in the student population, and recognize outstanding students. UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy (BA '61, LLD '98) recently wrote a letter to all alumni, asking them to consider donating to this year's current fund for scholarships, awards and bursaries.

The Alumni Association Supports Student Scholarships

The Alumni Association has generously donated $10,000 from the proceeds of degree frame sales to the Current Fund for Alumni Entrance Scholarships. The $5,000 scholarships recognize high academic standing and promise, noteworthy participation in extra-curricular activities in school and the community, leadership qualities and strength of character. >>more

Fifth Annual Alumni Golf Tournament in Support of the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund

UWinnipeg Alumni Honours

Martine August (B.Sc. '02, BA '04)
has been named a Trudeau Scholar. The scholarships support doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern. August is pursuing her Ph.D. in Planning at the University of Toronto. >> more

James Gibson (BA '66) Professor of English, is the recipient of the Algoma College 2009 Distinguished Faculty Award. In Gibson's 41-year tenure at the University, he has held academic leadership positions that include Dean and Divisional Chair of Humanities as well as membership on virtually every Senate committee. Dean Arthur Perlini said that Gibson's volunteer participation in the arts and culture community has been noteworthy; his colleagues describe him as the “heart and soul” of their academic division, their Obi-Wan – their mentor and sage; and Gibson “personifies the University mission of engagement of the community, demonstrated quality and excellence.”

Internationally-renowned filmmaker and recipient of the 2001 Distinguished Alumni Award has been invested into the Order of Manitoba. >> more

Sam Wiseman (Collegiate '88, B.Sc. Biology '91) was recently named one of “Canada's Top 40 under 40.” Wiseman, 38, is a surgical oncologist, endocrine, head and neck and general surgeon with St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. >> more

Long-time community volunteer and former United Way and YMCA/YWCA director has been invested into the Order of Manitoba. >> more

Ariel Zylberman, BA (Hons.) Philosophy '03
A Rhodes Scholarship recipient in 2002, Zylberman has been named one of the inaugural 166 recipients of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. Recipients will receive $50,000 each year for up to three years. >> more

Honorary Degrees Conferred at Spring Convocations

Three outstanding individuals received honorary degrees at the University's 2009 Spring Convocation ceremonies on June 4th and 5th.

Special Convocation

The former President of Peru, Alejandro Toledo (LLD '09) - a man of Indigenous Andean heritage who as a young boy worked shining shoes and later went to university in the United States on a scholarship and became an economist, received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from The University of Winnipeg in a special convocation ceremony on June 2nd. >> more  

The Science Complex

  An $18,042,000 infrastructure grant by the Government of Canada to The University of Winnipeg means thousands of science students will benefit from a new, state-of-the-art Science Complex. Construction will begin in 2009, with completion scheduled for March 2011. The project will create approximately 750 jobs over the next two years. >> more

Redevelopment of United Army Surplus Site and Greyhound Bus Depot

Downtown Winnipeg is about to get one of its largest bookstores in a newly-refurbished space in the Greyhound bus depot, and a new three-storey building constructed to a minimum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Standard will rise at the corner of Portage Avenue and Colony Street. >> more

The Institute of Urban Studies Celebrates 40 Years

Since 1969, IUS has been an independent research centre at The University of Winnipeg examining urban development issues. The University of Winnipeg Volume I and II by Dr. Bedford

Many alumni have fond memories of Dr. A Gerald (Gerry) Bedford (BA Hons. '48), an alumnus of United College and professor of English at his alma mater from 1951 to 1991. Before he passed away in December 2008, he wrote a two-volume history of the University. The University of Winnipeg Volume I: A History of the Founding Colleges has now been published in a new edition, a companion to Volume II: The First Forty Years (1967-2007), which was published in 2007.
