There were only a few tears, and a lot of smiles on January 23rd as The Press Gallery and Edmonton Opera hosted "I want to be a Pirate": a singing contest for kids with a grand prize of a role in Edmonton Opera's upcoming Pirates of Penzance this February.
23 young performers enjoyed a fun afternoon of singing and laughs on West Edmonton Mall's Santa Maria. Parents and kids alike were grateful for the opportunity, and we all look forward to seeing what winner Karina Cox will bring to her role in the show.
From Italian arias to broadway showstoppers, from Paul McCartney to Taylor Swift, celebrity judges Brian Deedrick, Graham Hicks, Jennifer Martin and Asha Tomlinson, MC'd by Bridget Ryan, saw it all, and were very impressed with the turnout. "Pirates of Penzance is so fun and silly that this was the perfect opportunity to bring out the talent of young performers in Edmonton," said Brian Deedrick, Edmonton Opera's Artistic Director."... And one of the little guys even made me cry with his gorgeous What I did for Love!"
