Garment Travel Tips

Whether for a weekend in the mountains or 10 days on a tropical island, the experts at The Press Gallery have a few tips for you:

Fold Service: We offer a hand-fold service for ease of packing for your business or pleasure trips. Hand-folded in tissue and individually packaged garments allows you to wear your dress shirt wrinkle free at your destination. If you tell us you are traveling, many more of your pieces can be folded for you after cleaning and finishing to prevent unnecessary wrinkling. Extra charges may apply.

Transport: Keep your other fine garments individually bagged in our Press Gallery plastic film wrap, and on a hanger, in your travel bag. Immediately unpack and hang your garment when you arrive. You will be surprised how well they keep their shape. Do not store your garments in our protective plastic film garment cover, but do transport them this way.

Ironing: Avoid hand ironing unless absolutely necessary. It is often better to use steam (not water) and less heat; in other words, don't place the iron directly on the garment unless absolutely necessary, and always make sure water is not dripping out of the iron before working on your garment. To protect most fibers from heat, unless they are light colored cottons, linens and silks, use a clean white cotton cloth to place over your working piece.

Stain Removal: If you are tempted to use your own home stain removal remedy, avoid doing so on the following stains: ink, paint, red wine, white out, grass, mustard and any oil based stains. Water alone can set the stain or wick out the tanners and permanently re-dye the fabric. Allow these stains to air dry, and bring them to us as soon as you can. Leave any stain on a silk fabric to the professionals. An absolute guarantee of successful removal is never possible, but far more realistic if you leave the entire process to your clean team.

Wearing: To keep your wardrobe fresh, wear undergarments and apply baby powder to your skin in hot and humid climates. This keeps your wardrobe fresh smelling and perspiration away from your valuable dress clothes. Your undergarments are usually washable.

Servicing: If you require professional cleaning services on the road, here are some tips: 1) valet service is generally more expensive, impersonal and automatically rushed; this does not always serve you well; 2) if you have the time, deal personally with a reputable cleaner and allow as much time as your schedule will allow; 3) time usually equates to quality.

Dry Cleaners: How do I identify a reputable cleaner when I travel? General rules of thumb: check the call office for cleanliness, accreditations and smell (yes, a good operation should not smell like a Dry Cleaners with today’s technology). Ensure that you see a proportionate number of ladies garments hanging as you do men. The reality is women tend to be more particular on quality and their garments with overlays, beads and fabrics present a tougher challenge to our industry. In summary if the local ladies are pleased so will you be!

Reminder:
Remove Stains and Soils before Storing Your Seasonal Garments

We’ve previously addressed the reasons for not storing your garments stained or soiled, but offer this reminder. A re-cap of the benefits to you and your garments are:
  1. Timely cleaning will prevent insect damage;

  2. Will not allow stains to set with time and;

  3. The acid or alkaline in stains will not have the time to remove colour; weaken, or even dissolve some fabrics if cleaned reasonably soon.
