From The Greens - Superintendent Rick David
Spring Transition Period
Seasonal transition periods can be seen throughout the entire world. Here in Alberta we have a Spring transition period. In the southern United States there is a Winter transition period. Just as we may go through steps in the spring to ensure plant health for the pending playing season, so must states like Arizona and California to produce their winter playing surfaces.
In November, southern states will overseed cool season grass varieties (perennial rye grass, fescue, and/or rough bluegrass) into greens, tees and fairways. The success of the overseeding program largely depends on weather conditions. Weather will dictate how soon prime playing conditions can be achieved as warm temperatures & adequate moisture helps provide a healthy, dense turf sand, while cool weather & drought leads to a weak, sparse turf stand.
Similar to the Winter transition period in the southern U.S., Alberta undergoes a turfgrass transition period. In central Alberta this transition period usually happens from the third week in April to the end of May. During this period our turfgrass varieties are breaking winter dormancy.
At Wolf Creek Golf Resort, in April and May, our maintenance programs are tailored to promote healthy, dense turf. The height of cut for all areas is higher to promote photosynthesis, thus improving root growth. We use a combination of liquid and granular fertilizers to ensure leaf density & health. When soil & air temperatures become warm enough and adequate moisture levels have been reached, our height of cut can be lowered, and our summer maintenance programs can start (Ex. verticutting, rolling, topdressing).
The goal of turf maintenance department at Wolf Creek Golf Resort is to have optimum playing conditions by June 1st. Years that we have warm weather and average rainfall we will start our summer maintenance practices before June 1st. In years where cold weather and drought prevail, we will delay our summer maintenance programs. In the 2009 season, due to a combination of unseasonably cool temperatures and record minimum rainfall in the spring, we did not lower our heights of cut until the third week of June.
In summary just as in November in the States, during the spring transition period greens will be slower and tees & fairways will be cut higher. Weather conditions will dictate when we can lower the H.O.C. and start our summer maintenance programs.
