Construction Nears Completion!

Final preparation of the golf course is near completion, in the next few weeks we will be putting the finishing touches to the project. By the first part of June irrigation should be crossing #10 and connecting the holes in succession and by July we should be close to seeding. This is the crucial time in golf construction, weather can be a important factor in timelines and schedules. It has been our experience in the past that the ground temperature is key in seeding so that means the closer we are to summer the better results we will have. The maturation period should see considerable growth over the summer with almost playing conditions in the late fall. Once again the weather will be the key factor of early or late playing of the new golf course.

Deep tine Aeration

The question has been asked why do we deep tine aerate? The simple answer is that over time this method of turf cultivation will improve our putting surfaces.

Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil and reduced air exchange in the soil. The greens of Wolf Creek have shown soil compaction symptoms, (i.e. shallow rooting, thinning of turf, and poor water infiltration) for the past six years.

The reason we are having an increase in soil compaction problems is because of the age of our greens. Due to increased golf traffic over time the soil particle size has decreased, the organic matter has increased and the air exchange (pore spaces) has become smaller, these conditions influence soil compaction.

Turf cultivation is utilized as required to (a) correct a soil compaction problem (b) reduce the thatch layer and (c) increase the air exchange capacity. There are numerous ways of relieving soil compaction they include: coring, slicing, spiking, and forking. Correcting compaction, by coring, is the most significant aspect of turf cultivation in terms of effectiveness.

Coring involves using hollow tines (1/4 to 5/8 inch in diameter) to remove material from the greens. There are two types of coring (1) conventional , 3 to 4 inches in depth (2) deep tine, 8 to 12 inches in depth.

When you use only conventional coring the area at 3 to 4 inches in depth will eventually form a perched water table, therefore not allowing the water to flow downward. Deep tine coring breaks through this layer allowing the water and air to flow through the soil . Also by filling the holes with new material we are increasing the pore space and decreasing the organic material, thus reducing the soil compaction.

As with most turf maintenance practices there is a short term period of pain (two weeks of sub par greens) for the benefit of long term gain (years of improved putting surfaces).

Our Mothers day brunch was sold out in both seatings and was a huge success, our plans for next year include adding another seating and reduce the bookings to allow for more room for the patrons. During the afternoon seating this year we were visited by a food critic out of Edmonton for the first time, here is the article that came out in the Vueweekly magazine.

Sand Belt Drive Phase 2
  Wolf Creek Villages!

Phase 1 is now sold out and phase 2 has only a few lots left to complete. The registration of Phase 3, has now begun and should be completed in the next few weeks. The much anticipated changes to the roadway in phase 3 should be well accepted by the First offering buyers as it addresses all the issues that were discussed in the original conceptual plan. The new registered plan will be out in the next few weeks for everyone to review. Utility contracts are now being finalized in most areas. Our sewer and water lines will probably be going through sometime this summer. We have just signed an agreement with Atco gas for supply to all lots in the development, we hope to here shortly from Fortis on our power supply.

The Villages is now 85% sold with only a few remaining lots available in Phase 3, registration of titles is planned for early summer.

Vehicle Fire Torches 6 cars in Wolf Creek Parking lot!!!

On Sunday May 27th around 2:00 pm a club member noticed a SUV that was on fire in the parking lot. The Fire department was immediately called while the staff frantically worked to put the flames out with fire extinguishers. Unfortunately the fire would not go out and everyone could only stay back and watch the ensuing fire engulf other vehicles in the lot. By the time the Fire department arrived 5 cars had been destroyed with one only partially damaged. The freak occurrence is under investigation with the insurance companies at this time, the RCMP does not believe arson is involved.
