Another gold medal award

Picking up the award (from L-R) are Leslie Hastman (NAIT), Terry Drabiuk (NAIT), Cassandra Martell (Shaw Communications), Carol LaBelle (Shaw Communications), Mark Porter (Shaw Communications), and Nadine Gilfillan (NAIT)

Another gold medal award has been added to NAIT’s trophy room.

NAIT, along with Shaw Communications, has been selected joint winner of the 2008 Canadian Award for Training Excellence.

Both entities have been recognized for their vision in creating the Shaw Certificate in Leadership Development.

The specialized training program is a 6-month comprehensive development initiative that offers frontline leaders the skills and practical knowledge to help them become effective, confident leaders.

The Institute partnered with Shaw to design and deliver this learning program to 500 Shaw and Star Choice employees across Canada. Since January 2007, 256 employees have graduated.

Terry Drabiuk, Director of Corporate and International Training (CIT) at NAIT, says this is an important award for NAIT to win. “It recognizes our ability to partner with a client to customize and deliver a program specifically to their needs.” He says the award also highlights CIT’s ability to service a client in multiple locations all across the nation.

Shaw Communications is one of several private businesses to whom the CIT department delivers career-related and customized training. It has facilitated customized training across Canada and in more than 60 countries worldwide.

The joint award was one of seven gold medals presented by the Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD).

The Canadian Society for Training and Development is a not-for-profit membership association dedicated to the profession of training, workplace learning and human resources development.

It is the largest association of its kind in Canada and is currently celebrating its 60th year.

NAIT offers onsite maintenance training to Weyerhaeuser

Twenty students, from over 15 different Weyerhaeuser locations, commenced training in November 2008. NAIT instructors Barry Andrews and Walter Fischer recently completed a 10-day kick-off tour of four Weyerhaeuser locations - Shreavport, Louisiana; McCoomb Mills, Mississippi; Roanoke, Virginia; and Portland, Oregon.

They spent one day in each location, presenting an introduction to NAIT, explaining how to log on to CML (Computer Managed Learning) systems, and establishing expectations for their on-site distance learning training using student reference manuals and on-site support. The instructors met with students, on-site mentors and coaches, as well as Weyerhaeuser mill management to introduce the program and start them on their distance learning programs. So far, Weyerhaeuser is thrilled with the progress and to keep with this new momentum, are planning another intake in each of the programs.

Canadian and American representatives from Weyerhaeuser came to NAIT in February of 2007 to tour the trade training at several Canadian colleges, specifically looking at mill maintenance trades for electricians and millwrights working in their US facilities.

This tour resulted in the issuance of an RFP for the design and delivery of training for millwright and electrical apprentices working in Weyerhaeuser’s facilities throughout the United States. NAIT responded and was successful in being selected as the training institution of choice based on our flexibility, curriculum design and experience in corporate training.

Together with Weyerhaeuser, we customized curriculum specific to their needs and thanks to program experience, were able to respond quickly with distance delivery options for these apprenticeship programs.

Mexican workers keen on coming to Alberta

A contingent of three - CIT’s very own Dawn Prout, Derek Vokey, and Terry Maik - undertook an exploratory mission to the city of Queretaro, Mexico to assess the skilled workers, determine a possible source for Alberta companies, determine the viability of a Job Fair for Alberta based companies and scout a potential training centre.

The group met with the mayor of Queretaro, Manuel Gonzalez Valle, to discuss institution building and other trades training initiatives, from which an MOU was signed for NAIT, and the municipality, to explore its relationship further. This municipality is looking to NAIT to help promote its people as viable workers for Alberta companies and help organize an international fair. Following this tour, a consultancy agreement was signed with the Minister of Sustainable Development, and training sessions for this project commenced in December 2008. NAIT will also support the job fair, which runs February 5 to 9, 2009.

For more information on this event contact Terry Maik at 780.378.5053 or tmaik@nait.ca.

NAIT Calgary Site relocates

NAIT’s Calgary Site is moving into leased space in a new building in the city’s northeast this fall, expanding the Institute’s capacity to offer southern Albertans access to unique programming, from apprenticeship to degrees. These programs include Roofer, Lather – Interior Systems Mechanic, the Bachelor of Technology in Technology Management and the Bachelor of Business Administration in Enterprise Management. The last two are degrees offered by NAIT since fall 2007 and 2008, respectively, with a mixture of in-class and online components.

NAIT will also continue to offer customized training for business and industry in Calgary to companies in the oil and gas sector, construction sector, and the telecom sector. NAIT will utilize the new site as a springboard for corporate and international training to meet the needs of the many multinational corporations with operations in Calgary.

NAIT has had a presence in Calgary for a number of years, delivering unique apprenticeship programs and maintaining relationships with key partners whose head offices are in southern Alberta. The new office is significantly larger, with five offices, three classrooms, a computer lab, a shop and an instructor’s lounge.

In August 2008, ten offenders from the Drumheller Institution Minimum Security Unit graduated from the eight-week NAIT/CORCAN Pre-Employment Carpentry Program. Selected modules from the first and second year Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Carpentry Program provided basic entry-level knowledge and skills, and a NAIT certificate in Pre-Employment Carpentry.

Graduates are now working alongside professional tradespersons, having their hours credited towards a Carpentry Apprenticeship program, while gaining valuable field experience. They are currently assisting with construction of a 20-unit affordable housing complex in the Town of Drumheller.

By providing offenders with the employment experience and skills they need to become productive citizens when they return to the community, CORCAN plays a key role in Correctional Services Canada’s mandate to enhance public safety.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia chooses NAIT for Professional Development of Curriculum Developers

As a result of enormous economic prosperity and rapid population growth, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plans to build 80 new technical and vocational colleges over the next few years. NAIT is extremely honoured and pleased that they came to us for direction on how to go about achieving their goal.

This summer, a group of 12 educators from the newly formed Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) of Saudi Arabia landed in Edmonton to spend time at NAIT to acquire insight on how NAIT links with industry, develops curriculum and courses, and how and why we do institutional research.

The intent of this program was to have TCVC experience the entire instructional life-cycle. Specifically designed for the Saudi students, the program centred around instructor development, through Dr. John Knapp’s expert facilitation of “Becoming a Master Instructor,” a program which is mandatory for all NAIT instructors. During the course of the program, Dr. Knapp was pleased to discover that TCVD was already extensively using NAIT’s Implementation Handbook for Validating and Updating Curriculum, which he co-authored.

“NAIT is an example of Canadian excellence in technical education, in the footsteps of prominent institutions like MIT,” says Dr. Meslet AlHajri, General Director of the Technical & Vocational Training Corporation.

While 10-day visit was action-packed with learning, the Saudis were given a taste of Edmonton culture with accommodation at the Fantasyland Hotel, a day trip to Banff and Lake Louise and a day at the Heritage Festival in Hawrelak Park.

NAIT assists Alberta companies to source skilled workers in India

The long line snaking its way to the front of the building in which the Alberta Job and Education Recruitment Fair was being held in the city of Chennai told the whole story. More than 2000 skilled workers from four cities across India turned up to apply for skilled jobs in Alberta.

In partnership with three Alberta based companies and the Alberta Government, NAIT sought to attract and recruit many of these Indian applicants for future employment in Alberta’s skilled trades and hospitality industries.

Through its NAITfind program, a team from the Institute assisted PCL, OPTI Canada Inc. and P&H MinePro Services with filling their labour needs. For eight days, the NAIT team screened and assessed skilled workers in the cities of Cochin, Baroda, Delhi and of course Chennai.

Alberta’s booming economy requires four hundred thousand skilled workers to support $250 billion worth of work in the next 10 years. NAITfind’s mandate is to match the labour needs of organizations throughout the Province of Alberta with highly skilled individuals from across Canada and around the globe.

“NAIT is very pleased to be able to offer our clients a full service option through NAITfind to help them recruit, select, train, and retain the skilled labour force they need to remain successful and competitive in their markets,” explains Dawn Prout, Project Coordinator for Government Programs in the Department of Corporate and International Training at NAIT.

Prout, who was a member of the team to India, was particularly impressed with the quality of the workers whom they encountered. “The candidates we met with are extremely skilled, enthusiastic, and already possess international work experience. Most have worked in their trade in countries such as United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, USA, and Singapore.”

Neil Bowker, Director of Workforce Strategies at PCL says “NAIT has some really useful knowledge of the Indian market place, local culture as well as the recruitment and assessment process and that helped us to sift through the many qualified and experienced people who turned up.”

Successful applicants will be eligible for a work permit under the Temporary Foreign Worker program. The permits can range from one to three years in length and are issued by the government of Canada.

While the NAIT team determined that most candidates will require training in English prior to working in Alberta, they were generally satisfied with the basic standard of English that they encountered. “Most candidates have a basic level of conversational English, however, we are currently working on resources that will help prepare candidates with technical English for their trade as well as conversational English,” Prout says.

NAIT seeks to forge partnerships at major oil & gas career expo

The global demand for energy is rising and so too is the need for skilled personnel who can keep the oil flowing throw the Alberta pipelines.

NAIT has been moving to help ease the acute shortage of qualified trade persons by forging partnerships with some of the major players in the oil and gas industry. The Institute’s latest efforts will be targeted at the hoards of national, international and multinational corporations that will be descending on Calgary for the Global Petroleum Career Exposition in June.

An eight member team from the Institute’s Department of Corporate and International Training will be leading the NAIT drive at the event.

They will be seeking to recruit qualified and experienced personnel to help ease the shortage of instructors for their corporate training worldwide. This will go a far way in strengthening the Institute’s ability to train more skilled trade workers for the oil and gas industry.

The team will also be seeking to partner with companies throughout the province that are unable to satisfy their labour demand within Alberta's currently limited labour pool.

“One thing that we have to offer is our ability to find, screen, and assess skilled workers on behalf of one of our many corporate partners within the Alberta economy”, says Terry Drabiuk, who is Director in the Department of Corporate and International Training at NAIT.

The Global Petroleum Career Exposition, which will be held at the TELUS Convention Centre, is specifically designed for energy producers, service companies, recruiters and training professionals.

With a target attendance of five thousand, the candidate base will be made up of industry professionals specializing in a range of areas. These include: automation, chemical technology, completions, drafting, engineering, environment, fabrication, field operators, geoscientists, health and safety, information technology, instrumentation, labourers, optimization, production, research and development and well services.

Skilled trades people such as heavy equipment operators, machinists, mechanics, millwrights, electricians, pipefitters, rig technicians and welders will also be attending the event.

Drabiuk believes that this bi-annual event can be of benefit to everyone with an interest in the industry. “The world is short on skilled labour and this is an ideal opportunity for industry players to showcase their companies to the right employees.”

The expo will run from June 10 - 12 and is being held in conjunction with the renowned Global Petroleum Show.

NAIT's Aboriginal Initiatives Grads Rev Up the Oil Industry

A unique partnership is providing trades training and employment in northern Alberta for 80 people of Aboriginal origin. Once participants finish the intensive, multi-faceted training program, close to 48 of the participants will be eligible to become apprentices in pipefitting, welding or electrical.

The Horizon NIM training initiative is a partnership of Canadian Natural, Alberta Employment, Immigration and Industry, and NAIT as well as several Aboriginal communities and organizations. This program combines classroom training and on-site training and work experience. Its goals are two-fold: to provide Aboriginals with training that leads to long-term employment and to provide skilled workers for the chronic labour shortages facing Alberta industry.

“This program will make students as employment ready as they can be in the field they are pursuing,” said Dorothy Anderson, a project manager in NAIT’s Aboriginal Initiatives unit. “By the time they graduate, they will have had 320 hours of hands-on technical exposure.”

But the Horizon initiative offers much more than trades training. It begins in the classroom with employability and life skills training to prepare students for the employment and training environment. Understanding the impact of employment on the family, employer expectations and other challenges faced in the workplace are important components. Classroom training also includes academic upgrading in math and science, safety training and toward the end of the program, training in writing resumes and being interviewed.

The program area also administers the Alberta Apprenticeship Entrances Exam for every eligible student at each level he or she is challenging. Integral to the program is the support and encouragement of the on-site coordinator, NAIT instructors and program managers.

“People enrolling in this program often have complex lives and personal challenges to overcome before they can succeed at school or work,” says Anderson. “We help them to address these barriers and also ensure on-site support is provided to them when they get to the work camp.”

Students are screened for admission to the program, and classes are small. Each cohort in the four training cycles admitted 20 students, and an average of 12 advanced to the Horizon site near Fort McKay for technical training.

“Camp work is not for everyone, neither is school,” said Anderson. “There is a natural attrition rate that occurs, and this has worked out well, as the NAIT in Motion unit at the worksite can only accommodate 12 students at a time!”

The first cohort began their training in March 2007 and the last group graduated in February 2008. Students were ages 17 to 44 and included both men and women from First Nations communities, major cities, Métis Settlements and Métis Nation of Alberta. Interest was shown from both northeast and northwest Alberta, so off-site training was held in both Lac La Biche and Grouard.

On-site training takes place at the NIM unit in Fort McKay. Students are expected to simulate the daily life of the workers on the site, getting up at 6:00 am, working hard all day and heading to bed early in the evening. They must try their hand at all three trades in the program (welding, pipefitting and electrical) before they select an option. Graduation rate is about 75% and each person who completes will seek apprenticeship opportunities with the various sub-contractors at the Horizon site, which began construction in 2006. NAIT provides on-going support through an on-site coordinator for six months past graduation.

“Even those who don’t complete the program gain benefits,” said Anderson. “For some, it’s getting their education upgraded; for others, it’s learning how to adapt to the world of work; and for many, it’s developing a sense of direction.”

IT Trainers Impressed with the Philippines

Two NAIT trainers from Edmonton winged their way to the Philippines last summer to conduct two weeks of train-the-trainer classes for the start up of a new call centre service in Manila.

About 45 Filipino trainers participated in the classes that focused on both the technology of the Information Technology Essential Services equipment, based on the Microsoft Windows Vista program, and on customer service.

“The Manila training was a strategic partnership with a large Alberta company that contracts out services both at home and abroad,” said Mehadi Sayed, manager of the Information Technology training in Corporate and International Training. “Canadian trainers were preferred, as the customer base of the call centre will be Canadian.”

Sayed says that though currently most of their global contracts for IT training come from Alberta companies, he expects the word to spread in countries and continents where NAIT services have been successful deployed.

NAIT conducted similar call centre train-the-trainer courses in India and looked after the training of 700 local call service operators for another locally based company. Since every contract and culture is different, the instructors get varied experience in dealing with diverse needs and challenges.

The two contracted instructors from Edmonton found the Philippines an ideal country for training. “They were impressed with the participants’ strong work ethic and competency in English,” said Sayed. “These are two of the reasons this country has one of the fastest growing economies in the support industry.”

   Long Term Relationships Foster Growth

NAIT’s Customized Leadership Training is helping organizations of all sizes prepare their management teams for the demands and challenges of business today.

Participants range from front line supervisors to senior executives and come from small, medium and large businesses. Though one and two workshops were often the mode in the early days, this area of Corporate & International Training is now signing contracts as long as three years.

“We often use a blended learning model that integrates the face to face model of training with WebCT,” said Kathleen Edwards, account manager for leadership training. “This model enables us to train all managers at a particular organization, regardless of where they are located.”

Edwards works closely with both the client and the School of Business to ensure courses are relevant and rewarding. The process often begins with a thorough needs assessment and then courses are designed to fill the needs. As many as 40 customized courses can be developed for a single client.

“We use the Harvard Business School model, “said Dr. Corey Wentzell, Dean of the JR Shaw School of Business at NAIT, “that includes Harvard case materials, high end simulations, and current articles, not text books. The courses are highly interactive.”

Instructors are carefully selected to match both the culture and needs of each client, and they use experiential learning as their primary teaching model. “That way the participants can apply what they learn directly back into the workplace.”

National companies have a particular interest in this type of customized training; managers in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Saskatoon and most parts of Alberta have received NAIT leadership training.

Edwards says that the key element to working with clients over the long term is to develop strong relationships built on trust. Currently Edwards is working with five major clients, but when required, she also works with 25 or more smaller businesses that have come to NAIT over the years.

“We get a lot of repeat business,” says Edwards. “Many of our clients regard us as their continuous service provider for all of their training: trade, technical and front line, as well as the management stream. When that happens, the whole institute gets involved.”

Down Under Collaboration Looks at Aboriginal Trades Training for Mining

Australia's Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) won't begin iron ore production until 2008 but the company is already extracting advice from NAIT on training Aboriginal workers.

Michael Gallagher, FMG's Aboriginal Advisor, first heard of NAIT's unique training program in 2006 when he met Andy Popko, EnCana's Vice-President of Aboriginal Affairs, at an International Indigenous Conference in Western Australia. Popko told Gallagher about the NAIT in Motion program and how this innovative approach had helped train Aboriginal people in Canada.

NAIT in Motion is a partnership initiative that delivers NAIT training via mobile education units to remote communities in western and northern Canada where there is a demand for trades training. Gallagher was intrigued with the idea and a few months later came to Canada to find out more. He attended a live class in Hobbema and was so impressed he invited NAIT to Perth to present on the program.

NAIT's Stephen Crocker, Account Manager for Aboriginal Initiatives, came to Perth in February 2007 and described NAIT's program to FMG's senior executives and Australian state and federal government officials. He also visited the mine's port facilities in Port Hedland to meet some of the native Australians currently enrolled in an FMG training program.

Crocker's trip helped identify potential areas for collaboration between NAIT and FMG. In May, NAIT sent Crocker, Terry Drabiuk and Grant Eliason to Australia to gather information for a feasibility study that will provide the foundation for an FMG Aboriginal training plan. The team participated in 31 meetings with a wide variety of stakeholders and also visited the mine site and port.

In June, Fortescue sent a three person team to Edmonton to review the study and develop further strategies for Aboriginal development. The team included Gallagher, Mine Training Manager Lester Davis and Community Development's Jennifer Pidgeon. During their trip to Canada, the team toured NAIT campuses and witnessed the NAIT in Motion training units in action at the Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. Horizon Site in Fort McMurray and the Diavik Diamond Mine at Lac La Bras, Yellowknife.

At present, FMG is reviewing the recommendations contained in the study.

Career Challenge Takes Halliburton Supervisors to the Next Level

Halliburton service supervisors from six countries were the latest graduates from NAIT's Career Challenge program, a three month program that combines leadership training with oilfield competencies.
There were eight graduates honoured at the June 2007 ceremony, representing six countries where Halliburton operates: Algeria, Angola, Congo, Kuwait, Nigeria and Yemen.

In the two years since its inception, Career Challenge has been instrumental in developing Halliburton leaders. The customized program includes technical training in data acquisition, electronics, pump maintenance and cementing; and leadership courses such as effective communication, people management, customer service, problem solving and decision making.

The Career Challenge program is putting these proud graduates on the map.

Trades Training in India Revs Up in Partnership with NAIT

The sun is beating down in Coimbatore, a major industrial city in southern India, while Edmonton is shivering in the cool autumn air. But both cities share something in common - a need to train skilled labour for an active economy and a willingness to collaborate to make this happen.

The Sri Rama Krishna Advanced Training Institute (SRATI) was established by SNR Charitable Trust in March 2007, the tenth education-related facility the organization has opened since 1970. Through the unique global networking that occurs today, SRATI heard about NAIT's customized industry training programs and contacted the college to find out more.

A SRATI delegation came to Edmonton in May 2007 to study NAIT's programs and operations. In order to fulfill their vision to become a world-class training institution for practical skills that meet local and global industry needs, SRATI is emulating NAIT's approach of maintaining strong industry connections and offering quality education to meet industry needs.

In collaboration with NAIT, SRATI successfully completed a phase 1 needs assessment in India which determined that Welding would be the first training program offered by SRATI. NAIT program heads from Welding and Pipe Trades spent August 2007 in India to advise on the construction of a welding shop and classrooms, curriculum design, and the selection of SRATI instructors, program heads and technical support staff. The first delivery of customized welding training at SRATI is scheduled to begin by year's end.

While the welding program was revving up, NAIT and SRATI were partnering on the development of customized Information Technology training solutions for Indian-based corporations. Other partnership projects underway are looking at training programs for other trades: plumbers, steamfitters/pipe fitters, millwrights and electricians.

MAFAZ International Development Company

Education in the Middle East, like in any other part of the world, is highly valued, seen as the means by which nation’s can progress towards sustainable economic development. This is particularly true in Saudi Arabia where demand for skilled labour is increasing, largely due to very aggressive growth plans.

Currently, 15% of the highly skilled workforce in the Kingdom is foreign, and the majority of foreign workers, however, are employed in lower skill level positions. With an official unemployment rate of 10% and a youth unemployment rate of 32%, the government needs to seriously reduce the nation’s dependency on non-Saudi’s and provide opportunities for their nationals. One in two Saudi’s is under 15 years of age and 60% of the population is under 20.

The government is taking direct action to improve the employment prospects for its youth by offering higher education opportunities delivered by innovative colleges and universities, as well as private sector organizations.

With the government forcing corporations to increase the percentage of Saudi nationals hired (when compared to expiates), specialized skill development and maintenance for Saudis is emerging as a pressing concern

MAFAZ International is helping build greater access to education and training opportunities in the Kingdom and has engaged NAIT to assist in evaluating the overall education and training business opportunity. NAIT will be working with MAFAZ International Development Company during February 2007 to conduct a thorough industry needs assessment, culminating in a detailed report that will provide the market intelligence required to make decisions about the specific education and training needs of Saudi Arabia, the physical facility required for effective delivery instruction, the equipment (administrative and instructional) required to support skill development and the type and number of instructors necessary to deliver the various courses. Then it’s on to phase 2 - making it happen.

MAFAZ International Development Company is involved in a diverse array of industries including agriculture, construction, water and wastewater technologies and much more. NAIT brings an abundance of experience in these industries, making partnering with MAFAZ a success for all those involved.

The Autobiography of Sam Lacoste

Global Enterprise Solutions Manager for Resources & Service Delivery, Sam Lacoste joined NAIT October 2, 2006 from Red River College (RRC) where he was the Manager of Contract Training. To add to his Certificate in Management (CIM) from the University of Manitoba, Sam is currently working on a Bachelor of Arts Degree for Business and Management Studies from the University of Winnipeg.

Starting his career right out of high school, Sam joined the Canadian Armed Forces to become an Instrumentation Electrician, and after a year of basic and aerospace training, he had his first aircraft posting in Edmonton, Alberta. He officially began his career in 1982 as an Instrument Electrical Technician on the C130 Hercules, and after eight years Sam ventured to other parts of the country seeking more knowledge and experience on other aircraft.

Sam Lacoste, Manager, Global Enterprise Solutions and Dorothy Lacoste, TCI Operations Assistant

Sam and his family arrived in Yellowknife in February 1991 where he was part of a detachment of Edmonton’s 440 Squadron. It was there that Sam worked on the Twin Otter aircraft and after 2 ½ years he was accepted into the flight engineer training program and was on his way back to Edmonton in July 1993. Less than a year into his new duties, there was news that the Edmonton airbase was closing, sending Sam, his family and 435 Squadron to Winnipeg, Manitoba in May of 1994.

While in Winnipeg, Sam completed various military instructional courses and began developing and delivering aerospace courses to junior aerospace technicians. Two years later, the Canadian Armed Forces had a Force Reduction Plan (FRP), sending Sam into early retirement and an aerospace teaching career.

After joining Red River College’s (RRC) Market Driven Training department in June 1996, Sam developed and delivered CAMC (Canadian Aviation Maintenance Council) accredited Gas Turbine Repair & Overhaul training, a program specifically geared to educate probable new hires for Standard Aero Limited. His roles as instructor, coordinator, consultant, program manager, and manager greatly influenced his presence and contribution to Red River College. With over 10 years tenure, Sam’s focus on business development allowed him the opportunity to work alongside government, industry, and associations to provide advanced customized training programs that would meet the needs of generations to come.

After being away from family and friends for 12 years, the Lacoste family returned to Edmonton, leading both Sam and his wife Dorothy to NAIT. Wanting to stay within the realm of post secondary education, Sam successfully applied for a position with Global Enterprise Solutions and Dorothy secured a spot with NAIT’s Technology and Curriculum Innovation unit – a perfect fit for both the Lacoste’s and NAIT.

Alberta Technical Institute Goes Global to Address Labour Shortage

With an extremely tight labour market in Canada and abroad, new and innovative ways are being created to attract and enhance worker skill. With technologies and job descriptions changing rapidly and a growing number of skilled workers reaching retirement, the skills gap facing business and industry is greater than ever. At the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), their enterprise unit continues to be innovative in coming up with “people solutions” for business.

Jeffrey Sundquist, Dean, Global Enterprise Solutions

NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions partners with business and industry to ensure manpower and skill development needs are met. NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions takes a one-stop shopping and full solutions approach for its clients in Alberta, Canada and around the world. Its motto – “Training, Developing, Resourcing” – encompasses the entire Global Enterprise Solution advantage.

“We position ourselves as part of the human resource team for our clients. We work closely with our clients to assist them architect and prioritize training programs and help them execute on those training programs,” says Jeffrey Sundquist, Dean of Global Enterprise Solutions. “We work together to ensure they have the most productive and safe workforce possible.”

To ensure a productive workforce, companies must spend their training and skill development budgets wisely. Every dollar spent on staff training delivers $30 to company profits. From pipefitting to information technology, NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions offers the level of training and expertise anytime . . . anywhere industry needs. And NAIT’s expertise can be delivered on-campus or on the job site through mobile shops. They’ll bring the knowledge to you.

Reaching Alberta’s Under-represented Groups
“We have a significant role to play in Alberta, particularly in the aboriginal community where a lot of the economic activity is there and yet there is significant under-representation in the workforce by the aboriginal people,” says Sundquist. “We’ve got a very strong team that takes the program to the people because that is where we see the best success, rather than bringing the people to the program.

”Terry Drabiuk, manager of Industry Training at NAIT, concurs. “We are people solution providers,” says Drabiuk. “Whether it’s workers coming from across Canada or from around the world, we’re working on bridging and training aboriginal people as well. We offer an intensive aboriginal program where we combine training and industry, so, when they go through the training, they actually get jobs. We’ve done this successfully in four provinces and two territories.”

In addition to the 8 campus locations in Edmonton and Northwest Alberta, NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions maintains operations in Bonnyville/Cold Lake and Peace River. The Global footprint extends to the offices in Beijing (China), Baroda (India), Vancouver, Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), and Cairo (Egypt). Global Enterprise Solutions has taken a focused and strategic approach to locate operations and build relationships in emerging markets where the demand for NAIT’s world-class competency-based training is strong, and the need for higher skills most urgent.

“As we grew the relationship in Egypt, it was practical for us to put a staff on the ground to help manage that relationship,” says Sundquist. “It allowed us to learn more about the Gulf region, particularly in the energy sector. Right now, you can’t argue with the need of the energy sector for people and skill development.”

The Global Enterprise Solutions program revolves around four key tenets: the organization, their infrastructure, the course instruction and the course curriculum. NAIT has developed this knowledge over 40 years and industry now reaps the benefits.

“It really shows how NAIT as a strong institution can assist other regions, governments, industries in creating that capacity,” says Sundquist. “You need to have a good understanding of what makes a good organization tick. We have that expertise and it is that knowledge that business and industry want to invest in and engage us to assist.”

NAIT Business Development Supports World Heavy Oil Show in Beijing The first-ever World Heavy Oil Conference and Exhibition to be held November 12 - 15 in Beijing, China, will bring together leading heavy oil nations to discuss the challenges, possibilities, and technological advances of the industry. NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions is pleased to be included as a sponsor of the monumental event, which will offer prime opportunities for the world's heavy oil professionals to meet and do business. Jeffrey Sundquist, Dean of Global Enterprise Solutions, and member of the Board of CAPC, the Alberta Petroleum Centre division of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), will be at the show to promote NAIT and to support the CNPC and Government of Alberta Economic Development (AED) joint venture. Sundquist says of the event, "China is strategically important for NAIT, given the vast expansion of the Chinese economy and their interest in investing in Alberta. The relationship between Alberta and China has never been stronger and it continues to grow. NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions' connection with the World Heavy Oil Conference complements our current training relationships in China and strengthens our position to be the trainer of choice for companies operating in China and for Chinese companies locating to Alberta. This is a strategic market for us, as indicated by the relocation of our Hong Kong training operation to Beijing."

What do Bonnyville and Vancouver have in common with Beijing and Baroda? NAIT Global Enterprise Solutions is growing! The opening of four new offices this year is great news for our domestic and international clients in rural Alberta, BC, China and India. NAIT training will now be more accessible in these areas, where there is a huge potential for industry, and the need for skilled workers. The Bonnyville location currently offers a variety of professional development options locally in the new Centennial Centre which opens in April, 2007. The NAIT Vancouver office serves one of our major clients, TELUS, along with other clients by providing corporate training administration, safety, vehicle and technical training. The Beijing and Baroda offices have opened to support NAIT's growing number of Global Enterprise Solutions projects in Asia and the Middle East.

Unique Partnership Addresses Skilled Labour Shortage in Oilpatch Lanzhou Petroleum Corporation (LPC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is vertically integrated organization with 60, 000 employees. Situated in North Central China, LPC currently exports labour around the globe and has recently engaged NAIT to train their employees to meet Canada’s stringent certification requirements. Journeyman refresher courses in electrical, millwright, welding, and pipe-fitting are currently taking place in China, delivered by NAIT instructors. Supplemental English classes are offered on weekends as part of the training in preparation for working in Canada. Following the first session offered in China, Vern Gorman, Program Head of NAIT’s Millwright Program says: "The NAIT Millwright department is very happy to be involved in the current NAIT/LPC instructional project. We are confident in our ability to assist the project by utilizing the many years of experience we have gained by delivering our internationally respected Millwright training in Canada. We immediately recognized the professional quality and commitment shown by LPC staff and trainees. A large percentage of the LPC trainees have extensive experiences in the Millwright trade." Harvey Lueke, lead Welding instructor, had a similar experience. "The students worked extremely hard and produced welds of very high quality and repeatability even in the extreme heat of the welding shop. They produced welds of a quality I have seldom seen in my 30 years of instructing." LPC employees will be ready to work in Canada early in 2007. For more information about the project please contact: Terry Drabiuk @ 780-358-5052.

Did you Know... "China is already the second largest importer of oil, having usurped Japan in 2003, but more importantly her economy is expected to guzzle an extra 500,000 barrels a day this year while local production stagnates. To put the country's thirst into perspective, supplying just the increase to Chinese demands for a single year would require the entire capacity of two Suncors." - Alberta Oil Volume 2 Issue 2
