January 2012

Starting this year we will be incorporating some new online booking engines with our software company Active. The first system will be the online event system which will allow certain corporate events to book entries in advance and keep data on the status of the event. This will be of great help with our member events along with growing number of charity tournaments. We will have more to release on this system as we go through the testing stage. Also being implemented by our software company will be our pay in advance system. This allows guests to guarantee tee-times well in advance through a secure payment plan. This system has become very popular in the US and we are looking forward to implementing it to our Resort. booking onlineor phoning us at 1-866-783-6050

New Staff Changes for 2012! There will be considerable changes in our organization this year, after over 28 years as Superintendent Rick David will be stepping down from his position. We thank Rick for all his dedication to Wolf Creek over the years and wish him well in his future endeavors. Coming in as the new superintendent will be Mike Stewart who will be returning after 8 years working at various superintendent jobs throughout the province, most notably at Lacombe Golf and Country Club in 2011. Mike brings a wealth of knowledge to Wolf Creek and as a previous Asst. Superintendent at Wolf Creek it is a welcome back home! Also returning after several years is Rochelle Baril as our Food and Beverage Manager. Rochelle had originally retired and moved to Kamloops. Finding retired life not to her liking and missing Alberta she is now moving back in the spring. This will be a huge asset to Wolf Creek as Rochelle was instrumental in creating and running our Food and Beverage operation for many years. She will bring a wealth of knowledge that will help improve and elevate the clubhouse operations.

Operational Changes with Cart Path routings!!! For many years we have taken a stance on restricted cart path use for our golf course. This has come with mixed reviews from our golfers especially those that ride golf cars. In response to this we will start to take down some of the ropes and rails on certain areas of the golf course. This will be an ongoing process that will depend on weather and turf conditions. However you will see an immediate difference on certain holes especially on the Links golf course. Though we feel it will make our customers happier we still will need to monitor how the carts are being used on the course. With a high degree of native areas it is important to keep vehicles off the dunes and on the paths or fairways. The 90 degree rule is always a good approach to maintain as it will limit the cart damage to certain areas especially tight areas that are always prevalent in Wolf Creek. Our goal is to make a more enjoyable day for the golfer however superior fairway turf has always been a hallmark of wolf creek, our course marshals will be more diligent in the future as we transform to a more lenient cart management system.

Villages have another Three homes going In!!!

Conceptual of new Villa going in this spring!

Another villa will be going in this spring along with two new homes behind #12 green in Phase 3. It will be nice to see some homes by the lake and take advantage of the great view going down #12 fairways. I have been talking to several other lot owners many are itching to build as soon as they can sell their home. I think the economy is slowly coming back so we are looking forward to more movement in 2012. The Village is a great lifestyle having the advantage of country living with big city amenities.

December 2011

Our Year in reflection!! Another year is about to leave us and it's time to reflect on our past journey. No doubt 2011 will go down as one of the most challenging years we ever had, the rains and flooding certainly put a damper in our golf. But through it all the course managed to hold up pretty good, yes we do have some drainage issues that have resulted from the floods but so does the whole country side. We have been working diligently with the surrounding municipalities to get a resolution for future storm water management. Several plans are in place, we should have some sort of resolution by the new year. There will be a lot of road work in play next season, #604 will receive the long awaited upgrade to highway status from Alberta Transportation. The changes are already evident with the moving of the power lines to the south side of the highway. The result is a cleaner look to the old course and the back nine of the links course. Based on how slow this is going it will not be complete till late next year. But Oh won't it be nice to drive into wolf creek without taking your shocks out on your car.

August 2011

Score Golf Ranking are now out for 2011!!!

Once again, the rankings are now out for best public golf in each province and Wolf Creek has both golf courses in the top 15. In the last ranking, the old South and West course was ranked #3 behind Jasper and Banff. With our new configuration and 36 holes the Old course is ranked #4 in the province and the new Links is #15. It is our opinion that with time and maturity, the Links course will rise in stature and have an even higher ranking in the next few years.

From The Golf Shop September has traditionally been the best month to play golf at Wolf Creek. The golf courses are always in great shape and to me they seem to play harder and faster, just the way we like them! As everyone settles back into the routines of work and school, it's easier to get out and play some golf on the weekends or weekday evenings. We have some great twilight rates beginning after 4:00pm so make sure and call the golf shop to book your tee time! As Fall approaches, we have to think of those chilly mornings and evenings. The Golf Shop has you covered for outerwear that will take any chill off. If you are thinking wind chill, we have some great wind wear from Antigua and Abacus that will protect you from the chill and leave you room to swing free. Also, some really great sweaters from Greg Norman, Ashworth and Second Skin that you must check out; they are not only styling they are practical too! Ladies, you have to see the wind sweater from Abacus. It's lined on the inside for wind protection and one of its kind for look and feel!

For those really cool days check out our line of toques and cart mitts. They are a must if you are going to play any Fall golf in this country! September is also a great month for equipment sales. Most companies are trying to sell out their inventory so if you are in the market for some really good deals on equipment from drivers and fairway woods to sets of irons or putters we have something for everyone. Stop in the shop and let our staff show you what's hot. Golf balls and golf bags are always popular items so be sure and check out our inventory. Here's to some great fall golf and some great golf shop deals! Hope to see you soon! Laura Witvoet Head Golf Professional

August 2011

Jennifer Ha and Austin Cruickshank win their respective divisions at CN Future Links Western Championship Jennifer Ha of Calgary won the Junior Girls division by four strokes, while Austin Cruickshank, also of Calgary finished even-par to win Junior Boys division at the CN Future Links Western Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka, Alta. In the Junior Girls division, Ha, 17, captured the title after firing a final round 4-under (67) for a two-round tally of 4-under (138). Ha, a member of Team Alberta entered the final round one-stroke back of first round leader Megan Osland of Kelowna, B.C., who finished the tournament in second at even-par (142). Ha, the 2011 Alberta Junior Girls Champion, overcame the deficit through the first 18 holes by making five birdies on the day, enabling her to clinch the Championship title. Ha won the Alberta Junior Girls crown one week ago by a remarkable 18 strokes at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club in Canmore, Alta. "Over the past two weeks, my swing and my short game have really come together," said Ha. "I had a good game today and a lot of putts rolled in. Now, I have a couple of tournaments down south and then I want to get ready for the [Royale Cup] Canadian Junior Girls Championship." Team Canada Development Squad member, Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., had a solid tournament, finishing in 3rd place with a two-round score of 1-over (143). Rounding out the top-5 was Sabrine Garrison of Calgary who finished fourth at 8-over par (150) and Mieke Heyns of Lethbridge, Alta., who finished in fifth with a score of 9-over (151). Ha's Team Alberta teammate Austin Cruickshank, 17, clinched the Junior Boys division with a final round 2-under par (70) to finish at even-par (142). Cruickshank won the title by two strokes over Kieran Standen of Edmonton and Aaron Crawford of Calgary, who both concluded the tournament T2 at 2-over (144). Cruickshank qualified for the 2011 ATB Financial Classic on the Canadian Tour but missed the cut at the professional event in Calgary. His victory shows vast improvement from 2010 when he finished T27 in this event. "It feels really good. I played well today. I got off to a bit of a slow start, but I made a couple of birdies and that seemed to pick things up for me," said the Team Alberta player. "After all the rain, they did a great job getting this course back into shape. To play good here you have to drive the ball well. I was able to do that today and ended up with a great result." The rest of the top-4 was a close battle as Nicholas Scrymegeour of Cochrane, Alta., Jack Wood of Banff, Alta., and first-round leader Darren Day of Victoria, B.C., finished the tournament deadlocked at 3-over par (145) for a T4 finish. The remaining CN Future Links tournament schedule also includes the final event of 2011, the CN Future Links Atlantic Championship (July 18-21 at Sussex Golf & Curling Club in Sussex, N.B.).

Wolf Creek Hosts Alberta PGA Junior Masters!!

2011 Boys Overall Winner Tyler Saunders Glendale G&CC

2011 Girls Overall Winner Jennifer Ha Glencoe G&CC

June 3, 2011 - Ponoka, AB 57 of Alberta's best junior players took to the Links Course at Wolf Creek Golf Resort over the last two days to contest the 2011 PGA of Alberta Sundog Junior Masters. While the first day provided ideal conditions for scoring, today's second day was true to Wolf Creek's Scottish links roots and provided a little bit of everything that Mother Nature has to offer: some sunshine, some rain, and plenty of wind and cool temperatures. Through it all, the attitude of the 39 boys and 18 girls remained positive and it showed in some excellent scoring. On the Girls side, Jennifer Ha of the Glencoe G&CC became a three-time champion of this event, adding a 2-over par 73 to her day one 71 and taking home the title by six shots over Mieke Heyns of the Lethbridge CC. With the win, she adds the 2011 title to her previous wins in 2007 and 2009. Ha also took home the 18 & Under title with Heyns finishing in 2nd place, while other age group winners included Kat Kennedy of the Highwood G&CC (78-79-157) for the 16 & Under Girls and Jaclyn Lee of the Valley Ridge GC (79-76-155) for the 14 & Under Girls. On the Boys side, Tyler Saunders of the Glendale G&CC posted the day's best score for each round, shooting an even-par 71 today to go with a 3-under 68 from round one, for a 5-shot victory over Aaron Crawford of the Pinebrook G&CC. Clearly the Links Course at Wolf Creek agrees with Saunders' game as today's title adds to an already impressive resume at the course which includes the 2010 McLennan Ross Junior Tour title. Along with the overall title, Saunders also captured the 16 & Under age group with Crawford finishing in 2nd place. Other category winners included Patrick Murphy of the Collicutt Siding GC (75-74-149) for the 14 & Under Boys and Riley Fleming of the Collicutt Siding GC (73-72-145) for the 18 & Under Boys. The 2011 edition of the Junior Masters marks the 5th straight year that Wolf Creek has hosted the Sundog Junior Masters and each year the players leave the course with nothing but positive things to say, from the opportunity to play one of Alberta's best courses to the fantastic meals after each round. For more information about the Sundog Junior Masters or any other PGA of Alberta event, please contact: Matt McWhirter Communications Coordinator PGA of Alberta matt.mcwhirter@pgaofalberta.com

  June Tournaments and Club Events!!!

From the Chef With April and May behind us, we look forward to a summer of sunshine, patios and the long awaited BBQ season. I learned at a young age that no matter the weather outside, BBQ was the only way to cook steak, burger or rack of ribs. Nothing could compare to the aroma of a flame kissed steak, floating down the street on a summer afternoon. I would stand by my father eagerly looking on to the 'Q' salivating in anticipation of that first bite. The years have gone and the torch has since been passed. This Father's Day we invite you to salute the 'king of the Q' and allow us to serve you and dad in style. Come down for our Father's Day Special, a round of golf and join us at the 19th hole on Barney's patio for a 10oz Alberta Rib Eye Steak Sandwich. Every Sunday the County Line restaurant will be featuring a Sunday Brunch Buffet from 8am-11am, with breakfast & lunch features. Bring the family down and give mom a rest this Sunday. Friday nights in Barney's features Prime Rib . Slow roasted Alberta Prime Rib served with chef's selection of seasonal vegetables & potato, or make it a 3 course dinner, with your choice of cucumber wrapped mixed greens or soup to start, finished with dessert. Looking into July, we have already begun taking reservations for East Meets West on July 16th. With fresh lobster, mountains of oysters, shrimp & crab, along with local favorites like Pike & Prime Rib, there is something for everyone. This event will sell out fast so get your tickets early by calling Melissa @ 866-783-6050. The secret is out. Wolf Creek Golf Resort is more than a golf course. If you are looking for a corporate retreat or space for your next business meeting, we can accommodate. With a boardroom, banquet room, & lounge, we can meet your needs for groups of 10-200. Call or email our Tournament Director Cathy Wiancko today for more information 866-783-6050. We look forward to seeing you at Wolf Creek this summer!

From the Golf Shop Summer is here - I'm sure of it! The US Open is just around the corner and so is Father's Day!

The Golf Shop has all kinds of great deals for Father's Day. How about 15% - 25% - 35% off of one, two, or three items. Choose polo shirts from Abacus and Antigua, Adidas Tour 360 - 4.0 golf shoes at blow out prices, pants and outerwear are also on sale. We definitely have something for everyone. Stuck for an original idea? Ask our Professional Staff for their ideas - J.R. recommends Maui Jim sunglasses. With their wide assortment of frames in addition to all lenses being polarized - they will not only provide protection - they look and feel great as well! Talk to J.R.

Camille recommends Dawgs Golf Shoes. With a wide assortment of colors they are sure to be a hit with any guy on your list!

Mike favors our clothing line from Quagmire - choose from hoodies, polo shirts or tee shirts that change color with heat. They look great and are sure to be the talk of the foursome. They have a great line of fun colors and styles - see Mike for more details.

Troy recommends when in doubt a Gift Card is always a hit! Choose from any dollar denomination and you are sure to make the golfer on your list super happy. As for Lee's selection - he recommends a Wolf Creek Brand hat - we have a great selection of colors and styles to choose from and at $8.00 off each hat you can take two or three!

My recommendation is you purchase one of everything! At these prices and selection you will want to take care of every golfer on your list! Stop by the Golf Shop and check out all the deals! They are going to be hard to beat! Looking forward to seeing you! Laura Witvoet Head Golf Professional

May 2011

Spring Conditions at the Wolf!! Though the trees are just starting to leaf out we have still managed to get the course in good spring condition. The weatherman is always the biggest factor and after a hard cold winter it's nice to see we have survived in good shape. May is a time in which the grasses need time to catch up, this is no different than in the southern climates when the courses over seed in the late fall with winter rye grass. There is a grace period of a month or so that gives golf course superintendents time to establish strong grass growth to handle the heavy traffic that is about to come. This will mean restricted cart path use in some areas for obvious reasons, once established we will progress to 90 degree rules with as many holes as we can. The same thing can be said about green speed, you cannot expect to get 10 on the stimp right out of the hatch, the greens need time to repair from winter, soil temperatures need to be right to establish healthy growth, any course that pushes the envelope is asking for trouble in the long run. Once we reach June the maintenance crew will begin to groom the course closer and closer to the normal heights. Preparing the golf course through the spring is a process, over the years patience is your best virtue, you cannot go any faster than what mother nature throws at you, especially in Alberta!!

Golf Week announces top courses in Canada!!!

Once again Wolf Creek holds its own in another golf ranking, riding the recent popularity of Classic golf designs and the Rod Whitman name. Rod currently has three courses in the top 30 in Canada with a soon to be fourth with Cabot Links. Wolf Creek is the oldest and considered the standard bearer for modern classic design in Canada. Villages Sees more Growth!! Another house is going up on Wolf Run drive and we should see one more within a few weeks on Dunes Ridge. With the economy coming around there is no better time to build your dream home at the Villages. With a low tax base and progressive county it is very easy to get started, the villages offer great deals on serviced lots along with membership options for the Resort. From the Golf Shop-Laura Witvoet

After taking it's time to get here the Golf Season seems to be well under way. The Golf Shop is fully stocked with new arrivals and based on the feedback I think most all the apparel and equipment is to everyone's liking. If you haven't tried out the new R11 Driver from Taylor Made you really should - word on the street is that it's pretty sweet!

Callaway's RazrHawk with the Forged Composite material is getting major attention - especially when you hear the material they manufactured it with is also what Lamborghini used to make the body of their cars! I wonder if it moves as fast? Come in and give it a spin!

Titleist's new 910 D2 and D3 models are pretty fun to hit - try out our demo with the new Diamana it's game changing!

Make sure you stop by the Shop and say hi to the staff. J.R., Mike, Kelly, Troy, Camille and Meaghan are all anxious to meet and assist you with any apparel and equipment needs you have. Ask them about our May Special where if you make any purchase in the Shop we enter your name in the draw for the Taylor Made "Season Opener" staff size golf bag! It's gorgeous! Talk about a welcome from the new staff. If your game is in need of a lesson or two, J.R. or I would be happy to help you out. We are offering individual lessons, group lessons, packages or our ever popular Golf Academy to get your game in gear. Check out our website www.wolfcreekgolf.com or stop by the Shop and see us.

April 2011

Projected Opening April 30th!! This time last year we were enjoying 24 degree heat and golfing, though we were thrown a curve ball later in the month we still had April Golf. This year is another story, I still see drifts of over a foot in some areas along with freezing overnight temperatures. With high moisture it also brings flooding which is something we have been fighting all spring, the creek at one point was well above its banks covering all of #4 fairway. On the good side the creek has now resided to normal conditions and our superintendent seems to be pretty happy with what grass he can see so far, let's cross our fingers for a great May. All this points to a possible April 30th opening if all goes well in the next 10 days.

Power Play Golf!!

There is a movement under foot in the golf industry to find a game that everyone can enjoy that will take less time. This new game is called Power Play Golf, Wolf Creek will be one of the first courses in Western Canada to preview this new type of competition. Stay tuned for our announcements for future tournaments and leagues. This could be the next big thing in golf so you don't want to miss It.

From the Golf Shop Spring has sprung in the Golf Shop and we can't wait for you to see what we have in the store. We love this time of year - it's like Christmas in April. We are proudly displaying new lines from Adidas that will catch your eye with their vibrant colours. Ashworth is back and is it gorgeous - you'll have to see it to appreciate it. Antigua's line is really great as well - in fact our Outside Services Staff will be proudly sporting an awesome colour line from Antigua this year. On the Ladies side - how about the new line from Quagmire? We think you're really going to like it. It's new for us in the Shop and definitely an eye catcher. Also, check out the new apparel from Cracked Wheat, they have once again done an amazing job of colours and styles. We think you will admire the Annika line from Cutter&Buck - co-ordinate your outfit of shorts and tops and you are sure to be the best dressed on the course. Mark your calendars for May 1st from 12:00pm to 4:00pm where TaylorMade will be on site to showcase their new product lines and to answer any questions you may have as far as equipment may be. Even if you aren't in the market for new equipment its fun to demo the new stuff. It's your chance to test out the R11 and Burner Drivers as well as view putters, wedges and the amazing new Burner 2.0 irons that are absolutely rocking the golfing world with distance and feel like no other. We'll have some fun events going on that day as well so don't miss it. May 1st - 12:00pm - 4:00pm. Hope you are as excited as we are to get this golf season going - come share in our excitement - meet our new staff members and kick off the season in style!! See you soon! Laura Witvoet Head Golf Professional
