											 President's Message

The month of March is upon us and with that comes the opportunity to buy memberships at a discount. The Early Bird program ends March 31st after which memberships are still available but at regular prices. The proshop hours this month are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday until March 12th, then, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Many of you will have seen the "Notice to Members" that appeared in the Edson Leader on February 26th. There will be a Special Meeting on March 22nd, 7:00 p.m. at the Rec Complex to deal with Bylaw Revisions. There are 3 items that will be dealt with and information pertaining to those items can be obtained, by members, from the proshop. We require a minimum of 30 members to attend so please mark that date on your calendar.

Your Board and committee members are moving forward, on all fronts, toward the completion of the front 9 renovation. Although our recent fund raising efforts have generated positive response, at this point it appears that we will not have sufficient funding in place to proceed with the renovation this fall. Consequently, we are now targeting to commence on or near September 1st, 2011. We will keep you updated with our progress in all aspects.

The Consumer Golf Show is happening at the Agricom in Edmonton on March 13th and 14th. The Edson Golf Club will be there to promote our course, our renovation plans and the "fundafoot" website. It's expected that approximately 40,000 people will be in attendance over the 2 day period. If you're planning to attend the show, please look for our booth and stop by.

There are many exciting things happening for our Club at present. As always, we can use your help in a few key areas. If you're interested in joining "the team" and becoming involved, please call Craig, myself or one of the Directors.

"The strength of the team is in each individual member...the strength of each member is in the team."

										   Superintendent's Report

It sure seems as though spring has arrived. The warm weather is a sure welcome after a long winter. We are busy doing all the final touches on the equipment and carts. The carts will be serviced and ready to go for the season, and allowed on the course just as soon as it is dry enough for them to be out there. We noticed an increase in animal activity on the property over the winter months, most notably, the 15-20 elk that have called the course home for the winter. We usually see about 5-10 at most. Mother Nature did not do us any favors earlier this winter. With the early snow, followed by some warm windy weather, we did have some ice form on some of our greens. We did go out and through mechanical methods, we attempted to remove as much of the ice as possible. It is too early to tell just how much damage the ice has or has not done on the greens. We are confident that should there be damage, we will be able to get the turf back in a timely manner. We are currently looking at some small projects to be completed during the season, as well as some potential projects on the back nine for this fall.
Look forward to seeing everyone on the course soon!

                                           Long Range Planning Report

The committee has been keeping in touch with Grant Puddicomb regarding the ongoing plans for the front nine renovations. We have been given a "Shopping List" of supplies that we can possibly obtain locally to help keep our costs down. In the near future (before the course opens) we will have a water well drilled to assess the water availability on the course. We have been conversation with EPCOR to have three-phase power installed to meet our new requirements as well as having the power lines on the course buried. That is very welcome news especially on number nine where the power pole and line often come into play. If you haven't noticed the town has put in a chain link fence on the right side of number nine fairway replacing the pipe boundary, which is much more eye appealing.

We will have a booth in the upcoming PGA of Alberta Golf Show in Edmonton March 13 and 14, where we will profile our Golf Course and the Master Plan. There are in excess of 25,000 people that go through the doors during that show and we want to have them come and play our Golf Course. We will also be attending the Edson, Hinton and Whitecourt Trade shows in April.

										   Green's Committee Update

This past month, the greens committee met a couple of times to discuss some important issues on the golf course. First, we talked about the idea of a "nursery green" to help the greens on the summer time stay in perfect form with a simple turf replacement. The proposed home of the nursery green is on the old 17 tee boxes. The idea was introduced at the board meeting and plans will move forward this spring. Second, the succession plan for the maintenance equipment was brought to my attention. In the past, close to $500,000 was spent to replace older equipment in one season. In order to avoid this financial hardship in the future, the succession plan was put into place to keep equipment up to date through rotation while at the same time maximizing the utility of each machine before replacement.

											 President's Message

                                            Happy New Year All!

In only a few more months our course will be open for the 2010 season.
Much is already being done in preparation for the opening.

As you know, the Board meets monthly throughout the year and the committees meet between the board meetings. As it was decided at the '09 AGM to proceed with the front 9 renovation, the Board and committee members will be focusing their efforts in moving forward with that decision. Many things need to be accomplished and you, the members, need to be kept informed of the progress along the way. Our plan is to update you regularly, hopefully on a monthly basis, as changes occur. As things develop you will be receiving updates regarding fundraising, long range planning, course maintenance (greens committee) and member services. If you have questions along the way or would like to offer your help, please contact Craig or one of the Directors.

Many of us are excited about, and looking forward to the completion of the front 9 renovation. Our club will likely have close to 400 members this season. Imagine what could be accomplished if each member helped, in some small way, to make that happen.

                                           Message from the Proshop

With the golf season slowly approaching it may be time to start thinking about getting your memberships. Early bird memberships will be available until March 31st so don't miss out. If you haven't picked up this month issue of Golf Digest, than I would encourage you to do so. This months issue has the 2010 club hot list. Over 90 percent of what is hot this year will be stocked in our pro shop this summer. Can't wait to start swinging the clubs? Don't have any room to swing in the house and want to get a head start on the season? Indoor video analysis lessons are now available. Break that swing down frame by frame to show you exactly what we are trying to explain. Book your indoor video lesson today and get a head start. APGA consumer show, the Edson Golf Club will have a booth set up to showcase our golf club and to promote awareness with in the Edmonton area. We will also be involved in the two day club sale. Feel free to stop by and show your support. All of the major equipment lines will be there so feel free to try out all the new equipment.

                                           Long Range Planning Update

In December, our committee met with Grant Puddicombe regarding the front 9 renovation. We discussed our budget of 2.5 million dollars, where that money would be spent and what components could possibly be acquired locally. Grant agreed to supply us with a "shopping list" of items that we could start to source out here. That process is underway.

Also during that meeting we discussed proceeding to the next stage of the Master Plan design. This phase will map out exactly what the front 9 will look like when completed. It details elevations, hazards, fairway features and shaping, irrigation components, the drainage system and much more. Grant will be proceeding with that phase over the coming few months.

One of the main components of the completed front 9 is a pump house for the new irrigation system. The pump house will require 3 phase power which is currently unavailable on the course. Consequently, our January meeting focused on the details of power, the pump house, water wells and the possible locations for all those components. A local company has offered to donate our 1st water well and we expect that to be done within the next several weeks.

Moving forward the Long Range Planning committee will be meeting 2 times per month. If you are interested in assisting with the committee, please contact Craig or 1 of the directors below for more information. Future updates will be coming as available.

										   Fundraising Committee

Members - Rich Clemmer, Sherry Maine, Susan Hansen, Carol Eichorn, Troy Huntley, Craig Kibblewhite

2009 - Our first committee meeting was Nov 26th. As it was the first meeting of a newly created committee our focus was to create a scope of work and identify potential golf members that we could approach to join the committee.
We determined that we would meet the 3rd Monday of every month from 6:00 - 7:00, starting in January 2010. We would focus our efforts on approaching the community for donations and soliciting the Provincial and Federal governments for applicable grants.

2010 - The first meeting of the year was held January 18th. Many fundraising ideas were tabled and discussed including tournaments, raffles and 50/50 draws. We are currently progressing many opportunities but the key actions that resulted from the meeting are as follows
Send community fundraising letter to the printers.
Select "workbee" date at Directors meeting for preparation and distribution of fundraising letter.
Complete and submit Provincial Grant request for Phase 2 of Edson Golf Course Master Plan.
 	Investigate automated 50/50 system.

While we have decided to approach individuals from our golf membership to be on the fundraising committee, we would welcome anyone that would like to participate and volunteer their time and expertise.

										   GO CANADA GO!

Hello again! Well, we have turned the corner for winter. January is almost over, the days are getting longer, the Olympics are only weeks away, and commercials for "The Masters" have started to air. There is not really much new down in the maintenance department. We are busy servicing all the equipment and planning for the upcoming season. Not much has happened to the course this winter. Our only plans are to remove a few trees along the fence on hole nine so people can better see the billboard. GO CANADA GO!!!

										   Pro Shop/Marketing Committee Report

Although there is still snow on the ground we are busy planning for the upcoming golf season. This year we will be adding a Pro Am to our club tournaments. The West Central Pro Am golf tournament will take place on Friday June 11. This tournament will also be a major fundraiser for the front nine renovations with many things going on to help make the tournament a first class event. Stay tuned for more details, but be sure to keep this date open as you don't want to miss this one...
Keep in mind that March is just around the corner and early bird memberships will be available. As always purchase your memberships before the end of March and pay 2009 rates. Watch for Pro shop hours in March.

New for the upcoming season is a Fundraising Committee. Rich Clemmer and Sherry Maine are heading up that committee and are looking for members interested in assisting. The Greens committee will be co-chaired for the 2010 season by Robbie Robinson and Troy Huntley. Please contact them if you are interested in becoming involved with that committee. The remaining committees - Long Range Planning, Policies and Procedures, Member Services and Nominating / Contracts are well established at this point. However, if you have an interest in becoming involved, let us know your area of interest and we will accommodate you.

As members of the Edson Golf Club, we have much to be thankful for and much to be excited about. Our course has been in tremendous condition for the past 4 seasons and we have continually benefited by having the lowest membership rates in the area. We enjoy discounts for food in the Complex, merchandise in the proshop and we have reciprocal rates at Drayton, Hinton, Whitecourt and Jasper just to name a few of the benefits of membership. Going forward, a plan has been put in motion to complete the renovation to the front 9. All of us will benefit, in many ways, by the renovation and all of us can assist in the process. How you ask? Simply log onto www.fundafoot.com, donate $5, or more, and then help spread the word. By working together we will continue to enjoy the many benefits of membership at the Edson Golf Club while playing “our game” on a greatly improved course.

Happy holidays to everyone, wishing you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. Well, with this cold blast of winter, there is not much going on at the golf course. We are busy working on equipment and starting to get things ready for next golfing season. I am happy to report that Paul Bouchard, our Assistant Superintendent will be returning for another season. This was his first year with us, and he is enjoying the course, the people, and the Edson area.

With the Master Plan approval at the AGM held in October, we are busing planning what the work would entail. We are looking forward to meeting with the Puddicombe's and devising a sound plan for our course improvements. It is a very exciting time for myself as a renovation project such as this is something that every Superintendent looks forward to being a part of. We have lots of details to go over before the first shovel breaks ground, but once completed, I am confident that the finished result will speak for itself.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year... hope to see everyone in 2010!

MESSAGE FROM THE LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE

October 26th, this year's Annual General Meeting (AGM), is rapidly approaching. As there are some important decisions to make at the meeting with respect to our front 9, we thought it would be appropriate to give you a refresher of the events that have brought us to this turning point. Please take the time to read through this information as it will help answer some questions you may have regarding the upcoming meeting. Afterward, if you still have questions, please contact:

 Craig Kibblewhite: 780-723-7191
 Justin Heinemann: 780-723-7166
 Keith Linford: 780-723-3753
 John Crawford: 780-723-4229

Back in 2003 the Long Range Planning committee surveyed the membership to find out what was important to you, the members. The committee received approximately 80 responses and over 85% of those responses stated that something had to be done with the front 9. At that point we began assessing the plans that were currently in place for course improvements and we also had a serious look at how course improvements had been decided upon and completed in the past. By the very nature of how our club's affairs are managed, a volunteer board of directors, it is difficult to complete long-term goals because each year we acquire as many as 5 new directors. With those changes of personnel come different opinions on what should be a priority, how new course features should look, where they should be located and how they should be constructed. Consequently, at the AGM in 2003, it was decided that the club would hire a golf course design firm to create a Master Plan. The Master Plan would become the "blueprint" for all future improvements made to the golf course.

A Master Plan committee was formed by selecting individuals from the membership at large along with several of the board members. After a selection process, the firm of Syd Puddicombe and Associates was chosen to create our Master Plan. The design process started in the fall of 2003 and took until the fall of 2004 to complete. At the AGM in 2004, the Master Plan was presented, accepted and approved by the membership as the blueprint for future course improvements. It was also decided at the 2004 AGM that any changes to be made to the golf course, not conforming to the Master Plan, had to be approved by the membership at large. That was done to protect the investment that had been made in having the plan created and so that future board and committee members would not need to waste time "reinventing the wheel" with respect to course improvements.

As you can imagine, planning for a complete 9 hole renovation and raising the capital required is a daunting task. Thankfully, the individuals who have formed the Board of Directors over the past few seasons have been willing to tackle the job. If we were to not commit to the renovation at this time, who knows whether or not future Board Members would have the same willingness. The required planning for something of this magnitude needs to be done far in advance of the actual event. As an example, the items that need to be dealt with at this years' AGM, with respect to the renovation, were planned for prior to the meeting last year, and they pertain possibly to the year 2010 and beyond. As recently as last year we were still planning 2 - 3 years out.
The 2 items that you will be asked to vote on this year are:

Authorization for the Edson Golf Club to borrow up to, but not exceeding 1 million dollars, if required, to complete the renovation to the front 9 holes.

Authorization for the Board to close the front 9 to start the renovation process, on or near September 1, of the year in which appropriate funding levels have been attained.

With respect to item 1, why an amount up to 1 million dollars? The budget we are currently working with for the front 9 renovation is approximately 2.5 million dollars. Potentially, here is where the money will come from:

     Grant Money
     $
     500,000

     Our Matching Portion
     $
     1,000,000
(Cash, donations in kind (equipment, labour etc.))

     Loan
     $
     1,000,000

     Total
     $
     2,500,000

The intention is to borrow as little money as possible, hopefully none. That depends on how successful the club is with fund-raising. However, if we did need to borrow money, the duty of the board would be to ensure the club is able to service the debt before commencing. Also, fund-raising can certainly continue after the renovation has been completed.

With respect to item 2, why close the front 9 instead of doing 1 or 2 holes at a time? The main reason is cost and secondary to that is the logistics, time and inconvenience. If we were to renovate the front 9 in stages the cost would increase dramatically. The same equipment is required whether we do 1 hole or all 9. It is far more cost effective to transport the equipment only once. Labour, materials and fuel are just a few of the items that we know will continue to increase in cost as time goes by. Logistically, an integral part of the renovation is the construction of a reservoir for water storage. A portion of that was done this spring and the material that was excavated from the pond between holes 2 and 3 was stock piled south of the pond. We've all seen the mound. The pond needs to be 3 times larger than it currently is. The material that is excavated from the pond (including what is already stock piled) will be used to build new greens, tee boxes and for leveling and shaping the fairways. If we don't do all 9 holes at once, stockpiling the material that comes out of the hole would become a serious issue and would involve transporting it to various locations on the front 9, likely causing damage to the fairways in the process.

The time and inconvenience factors are very significant. We know that we may face a drop of revenue in the year of the renovation and possibly the year following. What would our revenue projections look like if people knew we were going to be under construction for 5 - 9 years? Who wants to play a 16 or 17 hole course for possibly up to 9 years? Many of us remember the frustration felt when we were playing temporary greens as recently as 3 or 4 years ago. We experienced a winter that caused severe damage to most of our greens and were forced to play temps until the greens recovered. That took about 6 or 7 weeks and many of us were frustrated with that amount of time. Imagine the effects of ongoing construction for 6 or 7 years.

The thought of "shutting down" 9 holes of our golf course, for possibly several months, is something that does not appeal to some people. However, many other golf courses have gone through a similar process knowing that in order to have progress, some sacrifices need to be made. We know that some of our members are able to play 18 holes of golf each time they go out. For them, shutting down the front 9 would be a sacrifice for a period of time. We also know, because we are able to track golf course activity, that about 75% of the rounds played at our facility are 9 hole rounds. So for most of us we may simply be playing the back 9 instead of the front 9 for a period of time and it's really no sacrifice at all, considering that when our front 9 reopens, the differences we see will be dramatic.

Many of the key elements required for a successful renovation are now in place.

We have an excellent, approved plan
We have approximately 20% of the required funds already in our bank account
We are ready to embark on a major fund-raising campaign
We have board and committee members who are willing to devote the necessary time required to attend to the planning details
We have a very good working relationship with the designers, Puddicombe & Associates
We have time to continue with fund-raising efforts prior to the commencement of the project.

When all aspects of this project are taken into consideration, now is the time to act.
Please attend the AGM on October 26th, and please vote in favor of the items that will be on the Agenda.

											 President's Message

                                            EXCITING NEWS!!

For those who have not yet heard, the golf club was successful with our MCFP grant application and we have received a cheque in the amount of $500,000. The money has been deposited into our fundraising account and can only be used for course improvements – namely the front 9 renovation.

MORE EXCITING NEWS!!

Our fundraising website is now up and running and is fully functional. Please take some time to log onto www.fundafoot.com and explore the features of the website. While you're there, take a few extra minutes and make your donation. We all know that the people who have the most to gain from any improvements done on the course are us, the members!

Many of us have been involved in a variety of fundraising efforts in the past. Schools, hockey teams, swim clubs, hospitals and countless other community organizations and causes have done some form of fundraising. Many of us have been involved with those efforts. Most of that fundraising involves going door to door selling a product or asking for donations. www.fundafoot.com is extremely simple and effective by comparison. All you need to do, in the comfort of your own home, is log onto the website and make a donation. Once you have done that, simply email some of your friends, relatives or other golfers you know who live elsewhere. The email could say something like this:

"Hi ________. Our local golf club just launched a fundraising website. Have a look at www.fundafoot.com and let me know what you think. If you like the site maybe throw a few bucks our way and pass the link on to a few people you know who might like to get involved with a worthwhile cause. I donated on hole #______ on the (whatever section – tee box, fairway, green). Your donation will be on the website for 10 years and it would be great to have your support".

It's that simple.

Have some fun with it. Let's see where some of the donations start to come from over the coming months. The interesting thing about the internet and the potential of our website is that the "world" could know about the Edson Golf Club in the not too distant future. But it has to start here... with us, the members. Please do your part!

                                           Master Plan

With the AGM fastly approaching, members have asked me, "What do you think of the Master Plan? Do you feel as though it is necessary?" My response has always been, "I think that the Master Plan is a fairly solid architect's rendition as to what our front nine could be. And, yes, I do feel as though the renovation is very necessary for the longevity of the club and its future members." Over the past few years the Edson Golf Club has experienced some extremely unique weather patterns resulting in some agronomic challenges. Everything from extreme heat, drought seasons, wet seasons, and problems with ice formation on our putting surfaces has made it difficult as a turf manager to provide our customers with above satisfactory playing surfaces. During the hot dry days of summer, the irrigation system becomes the lifeline for the golf course. A proper pumping station acts as the heart of the golf course, with the irrigation lines acting as the veins to disperse the proper amount of water to the various areas on the golf course. Needless to say, our irrigation system is something of a joke. Based on the flow of water in Bench Creek, our current water permit only allows us to draw approximately one million gallons of water per season. A typical fully irrigated eighteen hole golf course would go through about twenty million gallons of water per season. If it wasn't for the beavers building a dam downstream of our pump intake a few years ago, we would be in danger of running out of usable water during the season based on the weather patterns over the past couple of years. We have virtually zero fairway and rough coverage. The coverage on our tees is terrible at best, and the coverage on our greens is less than mediocre. Our pipe sizing for all these areas is so undersized that it results in friction loss as they are not big enough to handle the proper flow of water to ensure that we get decent coverage. We are required to order special heads for our greens and tees to try and maximize the water usage and keep consistent putting surfaces. Our undersized pump will only put out a maximum of 265 gallons/minute, with each head requiring about 35 gallons/minute to ensure proper rotation and 'rain curtain'.

Our control system for our irrigation is not only outdated, but the wiring of our satellites are terrible. In some cases, one station will turn on ten heads at once. This would require our pump to produce a minimum of 375 gallons/minute with 80 psi at the heads. We can only achieve a maximum of 65psi at our pumping station without accounting for friction loss or elevation change. At the weakest parts of the golf course we are only producing about 40psi at the heads. This means that we must overwater some areas, or spend lots of man hour's hand watering some of our 'hot spots'. As we do not currently have drainage under our greens, and having what I would consider to be terrible soil structure under our putting surfaces, combined with the fact that certain tee boxes get irrigated from the same station as our greens, we get into the situation of having dry, hard tee boxes and soft, wet greens. This requires us to spend more man hour's hand watering tees to keep them healthy. We in fact, have a few tees and one green that doesn't even have any irrigation at all! I can't think of one other course that doesn't at least have irrigation on all greens and all tees, with proper control of these areas. Our system is beyond upgrades, as the pipe is starting to deteriorate to the point of no return. We have repaired quite a few areas that were repaired once already, and most of the old glue joints are starting to develop 'pin hole' leaks. The pipe in the ground would not be able to withstand the increased pressure from a newer pumping station. The years that the greens will be in the best conditions, are the dry years. This is because we can manage the amount of water by simply adding it through the irrigation system. Unfortunately, we have no means of 'drying' the greens out during a wet period, due to the lack of drainage. All we can do is wait until the soils become completely saturated then use squeegees to remove the excess water from the surface. Excess water throughout the root zone will also promote thatch and disease development. This results in us requiring us to use more fungicides which does eliminate the pathogens but in doing so, we also reduce the number of beneficial microbes which are found naturally in the soil and would assist us in keeping disease stress to a bare minimum. Even as recent as this past spring, due to the dry spring conditions, there are unirrigated areas of the golf course that did suffer some turf loss. Those areas have yet to recover from the damages done due to drought. Not only does it take longer for those areas to recover and have established turf, but it also opens up areas for weeds and other undesirable species of turf such as Poa annua or Elytrigia repens (Quack grass), which there is no easy way to eliminate this aggressive plant.

The lack of drainage on a golf course can result in lost days of potential golf. When a weather system rolls through and dumps substantial rain over a short period of time or even over a prolonged period of time, it takes longer to have these areas dry up. It has in fact, actually forced us to close the course following rain storms (which most courses can open up immediately following the system), due to what is deemed "unplayable conditions". Being forced to deem the course unplayable due to weather conditions reduces our revenue potential in an already shortened season. Or even if we can get the course opened up shortly after a storm, it usually means that carts are not allowed on the course, once again reducing the clubs revenue generating potential. With the master plan completed, not only would we have proper drainage in areas that currently have none, but by having a continuous cart path throughout the property, the club would be able to remain open with 'normal' playing conditions.

We have done a good job of keeping the turf on our greens healthy over the past few seasons, not without some issues though. There is an excess layer of thatch on all areas of the golf course, but primarily occurring on the putting surfaces. Over the years it has accumulated to an unacceptable level. The past three seasons we have implemented and extensive verticutting and topdressing program to try and reduce the amount of thatch found on our putting surfaces. .
The excess thatch layer did not form overnight. In fact, it took many years to have this much thatch build up and consequently will take a few years to get the levels back to an acceptable depth.

We currently have many various species of turf on the entire property, most of which are not desirable for a golf course. Not only is it not very appealing from an aesthetics point of view, but it creates various maintenance issues as well. We are required to spend more money on herbicides and labour to eradicate certain weeds, (which by law, we must control restricted, noxious, and nuisance weeds). In many cases by having a healthy uniform stand of turf, the areas for those weeds to become established are eliminated or reduced as they don't have the ability to germinate.

Some of the other current issues that face our club are the current terrain on the front nine. With the uneven fairways on most of the holes, it creates premature wear and tear on not only the fleet of golf carts, but also on the expensive maintenance equipment. I'm not sure people understand just how expensive mowing equipment can be. For example: a green's mower costs $35,000; a fairway mower costs $62,000; and a rough mower costs $81,000. This forces us to spend unnecessary funds on maintaining and repairing our equipment which is directly reflected on the cost of memberships. Not to mention that when a piece of equipment breaks down, the designated job of that mower will suffer until it gets repaired. We have all had situations where we hit what is perceived to be a decent shot off the tee, until it lands and takes a nasty bounce into the rough, or along the tree line up against a root, or we get to the ball in the middle of the fairway to find out that we have an almost impossible lie. Issues such as these are reasons why it is almost impossible for us to play 'summer rules' at our facility. I haven't been to many other courses where it is deemed acceptable golf rules to give the ball an improved lie other than casual water. I am sure that I am not the only one who has lost a golf ball somewhere in the rough, not because it is too long, or because it didn't get mowed, but because of all the little 'pockets' where the grass may be six inches longer in that particular spot. We also have a hard time finding a "level" spot on certain tee boxes (especially the forward tees). If a tee box is built properly, it should have a two percent grade from front to back and be aligned to the preferred target area. Most of our tee boxes are miss aligned and make it difficult for the average golfer to set up properly prior to swinging the club. No one likes to see irrigation lines running through a tee box, let alone a sprinkler head right in the middle of an already undersized tee surface. With the master plan complete, there would be no sprinkler heads on tee boxes. They would be positioned just off the edge and do a better job of watering the tees.

Although we have had a decent growing season overall, let's not forget what the conditions of the golf course used to be with less than ideal growing conditions. Ice damage (resulting in temporary greens), plugged golf balls in the fairways and greens, having to walk through puddles in the middle of fairways to get to your ball, lots of rope keeping carts of water-logged fairways, and dead spots on most playing surfaces for most of the season. Without going ahead with the master plan, this past season is about the best we can expect out of our golf course with what we have to work with. With the completion of the master plan, we would have a premiere golf course while still being able to keep costs down and provide our customers with an exceptional golfing experience. We would all be proud to bring guests to the club and show them just how nice of a facility we have with more than reasonable rates.

Well it is that time already. The days are getting shorter and colder by the minute. With frost delays, tee times are starting as late as 11am. A closing date for the course has been set for October 18th. For the last day of the year we will be running an 18 hole ironman shotgun starting at 12 pm with all proshop inventory being 50% off.

September was a very busy month for the club with three major club events. The IGA Couples Mixed Two Ball, Mint Homes Parent-Child, and the fan favorite Ryder Cup were all a huge success. In the Ryder Cup the European team made a final day charge and over took the Canadians for the win. I would like to thank Linford foods IGA for sponsoring the 1st and 10th tee hole snacks for all three events. The Edson Golf Club would also like to send out a huge thank you to all of our major club event sponsors in 2009.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on October 26th at 7pm. Please come out and support the Club when we vote on the front nine renovation.

The Golf Club will be open for early bird membership sales, gift certificates and lesson packages on December 8th-12th and 15th-19th 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday. Let's hope for a great couple of weeks before the season ends so we all can get that one last round in. I would like to thank all of our members for a great year and hope to see you all next year. If anyone has any questions or concerns about the upcoming season or any new products on the market please don't hesitate to call the proshop or swing by as I will be here through the winter months.

Sincerely,

Well with the golf course soon to be opening, we are anticipating a great start to the year. With all the questions about what would be happening with the recession, we are showing no signs of slowing down. Memberships are up 15% from last year. So for all of our members be sure to take advantage of your 5 day booking privileges. There will be some new faces in the pro shop this year. We would like to welcome Matt Komada to the Edson Golf Club. Matt comes from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and is entering his 3rd year as an Assistant Golf Professional. New to this years staff is Reegan Macleod. Reegan will be a core part of this year's team. Also Laura Hurley will be joining this year's staff. Laura has recently moved here from England and will give us some much needed support on league play nights. Returning for his 9th year is Edson's own Nick Gremm. Nick is entering his second year as an Assistant Golf Professional.

The pro shop will be fully stocked with many new and exciting products this year. Some of our lines include Nike, Titleist, Cobra, Taylormade, Mizuno, Callaway and Ping. As for clothing lines, Galvin Green, Cross, Puma, Nike and Under Armour will be seen throughout the shop. No matter what your price range, the Edson Golf Club will have a variety of options to accommodate your budget. One thing to keep in mind is that we will match or beat any of Golf Town's prices.

Be sure to keep an eye out for lesson postings as we will be starting group lessons in early May. Any of our CPGA Golf Professionals will be able to help you with any part of your game. Keep in mind with the course opening shortly, league play will be starting up soon. So make sure to sign up, as spots are limited and filling quickly.

I hope everyone is well rested and excited for another great golf season. If anyone has any questions please contact the pro shop at 780-723-7191 or feel free to stop by.

See you soon,

Welcome to the 2009 golf season. With the warming temperatures comes a dramatic increase in the activity on the golf course. Justin and his maintenance crew are busy preparing the course for what is hoped to be an April 25th opening day. That, of course, is totally dependant on the weather over the next several days.

When we are able to play, noticeable changes have been made on the front 9. Recently, the ponds on #2 and #7 were dug out and enlarged. That work was donated by Rudy Prasser of Proficient Oilfield Construction and Carl Diehl of Idiehl Construction. The larger pond between the 2nd and 3rd fairways has changed dramatically. Johnson & Herbert Construction donated some equipment and manpower to start developing the water storage pond that is an integral part of the Master Plan front 9 renovation. Those reworked features will add to the playability of holes 2 & 3 as well as provide drainage to the surrounding fairways.

Much has also been accomplished over the winter months. The club applied for an MCFP grant in the amount of $500,000. If our application is approved, that money will be a portion of the funds required to implement the front 9 renovation. In conjunction with our grant application, a fund raising program has been developed that will be launched over the coming few weeks. The goal is to raise the 2.5 million dollars required to implement the front 9 renovation. A key component of the program, and something that all members can participate in, is our fund raising website www.fundafoot.com. The website is currently under construction but will be ready to launch soon. Donations starting as low as $5 can be made on the website and I sincerely hope that all members will support our efforts. Members can also participate by helping us market the website link to everyone you can think of. We all know the power of the internet and how easy it is to contact people via email. The more people that learn about this website and our fundraising program, the easier it will be to accomplish our goal.

The Board, committee members and our key staff have worked countless hours over the winter months to get us to this point. Their efforts will reap rewards to be enjoyed by all of us in the future. If you would like more information about the website please call me at 780-723-4229 or contact Craig.

I look forward to seeing everyone out on the course.

                                              Welcome back!

The Master's is over, with a very exciting finish, and now it is that time of year again for us to dust off the clubs, clean the dirt out of the grooves from the last round we all squeezed in last season, and promise ourselves to get that nasty slice cured once and for all.

The front nine will be open on Saturday, April 25, with the back nine following next weekend or earlier if we can get it ready sooner. Once again we will not have any temporary greens for the start of the season and are looking forward to a great year. Overall, the greens wintered well, #3 and #9 are a couple weeks behind most of the other greens, but I don't think it will take long for them to bounce back. Some of the tees and spots on the fairways show symptoms of some ice damage and some disease spots, despite doing our best in preparing them for the winter months. As I am sure most of you have heard by now, there have been some drastic changes to the front nine ponds over the winter. The pond by #2 and #7 greens have both been enlarged and dug deeper. The material from #7 was pushed over behind #8 tee box to build a new tee. This new tee will be ready for play sometime towards the end of the season. We want to give it another few weeks for the frost lumps to settle out prior to us getting the final shaping of it completed and ready for soil and sod. This new tee will play about 195 yards from the blue tees. The biggest change is on #2. The green side pond was enlarged to block the front left quarter of the green from the fairway. The fairway pond was enlarged to hold just over 1,000,000 gallons of water! It will definitely change how some of us play the hole, as the edge of the water is only 10 yards from the edge of the fairway. All the material excavated from the pond was pushed to create a large mound in the triangle between #3 and #4. Sometime within the next couple weeks, it will be harrowed and ready for seed. It will be seeded with primarily a fescue mix and will be left natural. We will be mowing a few times a year, but there will be a definite penalty for hitting your ball that far off the target area. We also transplanted all but one of the trees at the bottom of the hill on #9 and moved them over between #1 and #9 fairways to try and reduce the number of people who play down #1 fairway as they are scared of going out of bounds on #9. We will be transplanting more trees later in the season to fill in the gap even more.

I look forward to seeing everyone out on the course over the next few weeks. If you have any questions, I am always available to discuss course conditions with the members.

The Edson & District Recreation Complex has undergone some extensive renovations over the past few weeks. The Main Lounge and North Lounge areas were in desperate need of repairs. The majority of the walls in the North Lounge were rotten due to leaking around the windows. The wood, drywall, insulation and also carpet that was damaged has been removed and replaced. The windows in that area have also been replaced and repaired to avoid any future damages from occurring. The new carpet will extend from the North Lounge into the Main Lounge areas. We have added ceramic tile as a major feature to cover the high traffic areas around the bar & entrances.

The bar area was in dire need of repairs. Due to water damages from the outdated beer coolers/dishwasher leaks and other plumbing related issues under the bar it needed to be replaced. We found black mold growing under the tile flooring and in the walls. Everything was ripped out and replaced with new materials. The bar has been rebuilt with a fresh and modern look. We have a new beer keg system being installed to better serve our customers. Hackers Lounge has been updated with a bold & bright color scheme contrasting beautifully with the dark wood trim and modern bar area. Comfortable seating areas with sofas will add another option to our members wanting to relax or socialize after a round of golf.

The Edson & District Recreation Complex also has future plans for the outside of the Complex. The building will be painted and upgraded in the near future.

See you soon,

                                           Message from the President

The 2008 golf season is underway!

Based on conversations I have had with members and staff, it seems our course wintered very well and is in great condition. If you have yet to play this season I hope you can be on the course soon.

The Board has been busy and, as mentioned in prior updates, is always seeking input and assistance from our members. The Greens, Policies and Procedures and Member Services committees are seeking additional members. If you are interested in participating on one of these committees, please contact Craig or me and we’ll put you in touch with the appropriate director.

The Long Range Planning Committee is well under way with developing the blueprint for our fund raising program to implement the Master Plan renovation. Much information will be forthcoming as details are firmed up. The timeline that has been discussed is that renovation of the “front 9” would commence in September of 2010, provided sufficient funds can be raised. There is much work to be done and as the program gains momentum additional help would be welcomed and appreciated.

In closing I’d like to leave you with a few of my comments about “member input”. The 2008 season is less than 1 week old and already some of our members have deemed it necessary to broadcast negative comments and complaints to the proshop and maintenance staff. While your comments are encouraged, I simply ask that if you have a complaint then provide a possible solution as part of your comments. Quite often, when a complaint is received, it pertains to an issue that has already been identified. A workable solution to a problem is far more useful and beneficial to all of us than simply identifying a problem. Also, I urge you to let our staff do their jobs. They are capable, talented individuals and are part of our organization because of that. If you treat them with the courtesy and respect that you expect them to treat you with, our club will flourish.

Enjoy the season and check your email often for Club updates.

                                           Message from the Superintendent

Well I hope everyone has had the opportunity to come out and get a couple of rounds in by now. The course is in excellent shape for this time of year. We do have a couple of areas of poa on the greens that is about a week or two behind, but with the warmer weather upcoming, it shouldn’t take long for them to catch up. We are at a full crew already, with the exception of a couple of high school kids. It is the first time in my two years here, that I’ve been able to say that. We are looking forward to a great golfing season and hope to get quite a few little projects done this year. We will be reconstructing the entire flower bed around the practice green, complete the drainage project on #7, sod the mound on #7, finish the work in front of #16 tee, and remove and sod the mulch area behind the teaching tee and the first green; just to name a few. We are still waiting for some of our new course accessories to arrive and we hope they will be here sometime later this week. I hope you all like the new tee markers, once they arrive, as we are the first course in North America to get them.

We have governed all the carts down to help reduce some of the damages done to them during the season, and hopefully, we can have all 55 carts in circulation on a daily basis. The equipment is still doing quite well, and has allowed us to provide a better playing surface for all levels of golfers.

We removed approximately 180 trees on the course over the winter months, mostly because they were dead, diseased, or potential “widow makers”. We did burn the brush pile by the 9th tee box, and have placed all the material from the fallen trees there again. We will burn that pile again this winter, rather than leaving it to accumulate for years on end.

Have a great season, and we will see you on the course!

                                          Justin Heinemann - Superintendent

											 Fellow Members,

The 2008 golf season is rapidly approaching, although at -26 C I’m certain we would all be pleased if it was already here!

One of the main priorities of the board for the upcoming golf season is "The Master Plan." We are at the stage where we need to move forward with this or choose a different direction. The main stumbling block has always been – where will the money come from? There may be grants that our club would qualify for – there may be businesses and major corporations that would be willing to donate to our cause. The issue is we need someone to step forward and offer to steer the fundraising ship.

The task at hand is to raise approximately 2.5 million dollars. Achieving that goal will, in the opinion of the board, require someone on a full-time basis to lead a fundraising team. The board feels we have 2 options. 1 – a member could come forward and offer to be the "team leader." 2 – we could attempt to hire someone to be the "team leader." We are currently researching option 2 to find out if it’s possible to hire someone in that capacity and if so, what amount of compensation would be reasonable.

Folks, we need help with this. If you have ideas, suggestions or would be willing to assist with fundraising please call Craig (723-3311) or John Crawford (723-4229).

Fall is here and it is this time of year to start putting the course to bed. We have completed the first two fungicide applications on the greens, and will apply an application to the tees and collars this week. The fairways will also receive an application, but it will wait until later this month. I'm sure some of you have noticed all the trees that are marked with either a blue or yellow dot. These are trees that will be removed over the winter months as they are either dead, dying, or in a couple of cases, will be removed to provide better light and air flow to the greens and tees. Someone from the Alberta Trappers Association is currently trapping the beavers downstream of us as the water level in Bench Creek is too high for where we can manage it. Once the beavers are trapped, we will not destroy the dams, but rather manage them to ensure a proper water level is maintained throughout the season. We borrowed the demo fairway aerator from John Deere a couple weeks ago, and did manage to aerate all of our tee boxes, and a few fairways, but unfortunately had to return it as another golf course had it booked as well. We will complete the fairway aeration next spring.
The drainage project has resumed, we are looking to complete the area in front of the tees on number seven, and will use the excavated material to finish the mound on the right side of the fairway, and use the additional material on the side and front of number sixteen tee box. This is so that we can remove the railway tie retaining wall, which is starting to collapse on itself.
Overall, I am fairly please with this past season, and look forward to answering any questions in a few weeks at the AGM. Justin Heinemann
Superintendent

Several important dates are looming on the horizon and should be noted on your calendars. Sunday, October 14 will be your final opportunity to take to the links in Edson this season. The AGM is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, October 22 at the Rec Complex. Grant Puddicombe, who was involved in drafting the master plan, will be in attendance to make a presentation and answer questions you may have in that regard. I would encourage all members to be present at this meeting.
To date we have had no volunteers, from within the membership, express an interest in seeking out grant applications or in heading up the fundraising campaign. If you think you might be suited to serving in either of these areas please contact myself, or Craig Kibblewhite.
The Board is always seeking participation from the general membership to be active with the various committees. Currently the Pro Shop, Policy, and Greens Committee are functioning and seeking individual members to be actively involved with them. Interested persons may contact myself or speak to one of the board members at the AGM. Get involved on a committee because you can make a difference!

Looking forward to seeing you on October 22.

Proshop Report
October 1, 2007

The proshop staff would like to thank everyone who supported the proshop this season. We appreciate your patience with all of our new staff and hope we met everyone’s needs in 2007. We still xcellent prices left on merchandise and remember to use those gift certificates up before the 14th of October. We had a very successful Fall Windup event sponsored by Bob Joy of Edson Funeral Homes. The event was a match play event and had Team Canada against Team Europe which in the end Europe prevailed the champions of the weekend. We had 36 players play including Men, Ladies and Junior players.

We look forward to seeing everyone before the end of the season and hope you have a great winter!

See you in April 2008.

                                            Director of Golf Report
Thanks to all members, guests and tournament players that have made 2007 a successful golf season. This year the Edson Golf Club is on pace to play 23,000 rounds. Member rounds for 2007 are significantly up from that of 2006. Tournament rounds are down from past years.

The Golf course itself has been in great shape thanks to Justin and Jay and the rest of the maintenance crew. Dave, Adam and the rest of the pro shop staff did an excellent job this year in providing great service to all members, public and tournament guests.

I would also like to thank all of our major sponsors for this year's Club Events: Tim Horton's (Ladies open), Gelmici Jewelers (Men's Open), McDonalds (Junior Open), IGA (Mixed Open), Mint Homes (Parent-Child).
Have a great winter and we will see you back here in 2008.

										  Superintendent's Report

Over the past few weeks, the crew has been out pruning up the limbs on most of the trees on the course. This will be followed by a Round-Up application around the drip line of most trees. This will reduce the number of man hours required for trimming and should also allow golfers to find their ball under a tree much quicker and will have a much easier shot getting out of trouble and back in play.
We are still planning to do the greens aeration on Sunday and Monday August 12, 13. We may be required to push back the dates as the rain has made the soils on the greens very heavy. We could run into the problem of "rutting" the putting surface with some of the equipment that must drive across the greens. We will make the decision sometime Friday afternoon as to when the aeration will take place.
So far this season, we have experienced above normal vandalism out on the course. Everything from missing flagsticks, ball washers, tee markers, and smashed beer bottles on the course has caused us some grief this year. The irrigation shed behind seventeen green was vandalized during the same evening as a wedding at the Rec. Complex and we will be replacing that shed with one similar to the new "beer sheds" on the course. Hope everyone has enjoyed the summer so far and look forward to what hopefully will be a longer summer than last year. Should anyone have any questions about the course, again, my office is always open and welcomes the opportunity to discuss course conditions with the membership.
Cheers, Justin Heinemann
Superintendent
Edson Golf Club

The golf season is half over and I trust you have all enjoyed and appreciated the course thus far. Three issues that rear that ugly heads every year are the rumor mill, vandalism and complaints.

In terms of the rumor mill, there is no truth to the rumor that the Board of Directors is planning to dig ponds on the golf course this winter. Grant Puddicombe, who was involved in drafting the master plan, will present a number of options to the membership at the AGM on October 22 in terms of moving forward on this work. Once the membership has voted on what is to be done, more concrete plans can be made. These would include where the money will come from; how many hours of work are required to complete the project and if any of this time would be donated or available at a reduced cost; signing contracts to get the work done; the project timeline; and what individuals will head up the fundraising aspect of the project. With regard to fundraising, we need to remember that is an unrealistic expectation that 359 member will ante up approximately 3.5 million dollars to see the master plan completed. Nor can we expect to do this on the backs of green fee players. Thee are grants available and doors that can be knocked on. If you would be interested in writing grant applications or spearheading the door knocking campaign, once the numbers and time frame are determined at the AGM, please contact Craig Kibblewhite or myself. Other options for fundraising will be addressed at the AGM should no volunteers be forthcoming.

Vandalism seems to have been on the increase in the past two years. Whether it's because better systems and checks and balances are in place to root it out or whether it has actually escalated, I can't say. However, I can say it is costing more time and money to correct and repair the actions of a growing number of individuals. Should you witness vandalism, or action that are heading in that direction please advise the Pro Shop staff immediately.

Finally, it seems that some individuals have pursued the noteworthy vocation of complaining. The old adage, "you're darned if you do and you're darned if you don't" is certainly true. If the fairways are watered, we get less roll, but if the fairways aren't watered we get more roll, but brown grass. If the lines get painted in the parking lot we have to park at the back and walk a little further, but if the lines don't get painted we hear how people don't know how to park to maximize the space. There is so much out on the course worthy of our appreciation. Why not take a moment the next time you're out to express your appreciation to the staff for a job well done?

										      Catie Kopp
								              President

											 Director of Golf Report

The Edson Golf Club is again having a great year. Member and Guest play is up from years past thanks to the course being in great shape. Justin and his staff have done an excellent job maintaining the course throughout the year. From a playability stand point the fairways are more defined and the greens are very receptive to good golf shots.

The pro shop is also having a good year. We have introduced some new products such as Under Armour and Cleveland. The Under Armour clothing is a great product at a very reasonable price. The clothing can not only be worn on the golf course but for other sports such as hockey, baseball and working out. We also hope to start carrying Croc sandals in the near future. If you would like to see a certain brand in the shop please see Dave. Check out the website at edsongolfclub.com to get links to all the brands you see in the shop. The Edson Golf Club will match all competitors' prices. We take in pride in offering our members the best selection possible at the best prices.
This years AGM is set for October 22, 2007. We encourage all members to attend, as we will be discussing many important topics. Some topics will include 2008 rates, and future course renovations. As many of you know, the Edson Golf Club had a Master Plan developed to renovate the Golf Course. Currently we are exploring options in which to take on all or part of that plan. In order for this to occur we are looking for volunteers to sit on these committees. Grant Puddicombe from Puddicombe and Associates will be on hand to present some options that Edson Golf Club has to further enhance the golf course over the next couple of years. Once again a Senior, Adult and Junior membership draw will be held at the AGM for the 2008 golf season. The Golf Club will also be electing new board members at this time for a two year term. Any interested members should contact the nomination chair Russ Bayley.
Unfortunately this year the Edson Golf Club has experienced vandalism to the both the golf course and the golf carts on numerous occasions. Vandalism has occurred by members and guests of the facility. The Edson Golf Club would hope that all members appreciate and treat the golf course and its equipment with respect. Unfortunately, we have advertised for the marshal position with no success. It is up to the staff of the Edson Golf Club and Edson Rec. Complex and its members to report any damage to the facility or its equipment. If we all work together we can have a facility and a golf course that we can all be proud of.
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me @ 723-7191 ext. 2
Cheers,
Craig Kibblewhite

											Equipment Notes

The golf season is now in full swing and with numerous new products for every golfer to try it is time to make sure the equipment you use has the appropriate lie angle and shaft flex. The importance of lie is to ensure that you hit the ball as straight as you can, with an incorrect lie you may consistently hit the ball left or right. Shaft flex is also very important and having the correct shaft flex will allow for maximum distance while at the same time keep your shots in control. If you have any questions regarding your equipment or would like to get fitted please feel free to contact any of your CPGA Professionals at the proshop.

                                            Membership News & Services

Over the past few months we have had numerous carts damaged both by members and non-members some of the costs of these damages have been received however there are still some outstanding damages. We ask that all members please contact Dave or Craig if they have seen anyone damaging golf course equipment or property.
The Gelmicis Men's Open will take place August 25 & 26 and the Club Championship August 18 & 19 these will fill up soon so please contact the proshop to sign up.
Member reciprocal rates are still available at Whitecourt, Hinton & Jasper please book one week in advance to secure a tee time.

The Tim Horton's Ladies Open was held on July 21 and with the sponsorship from Tim Horton's the event was a great success with every person receiving a great prize. We look forward to working with Tim Horton's and the Ladies club again in 2008.

    Junior Golf News

During the week of July 2 - 8 Edson Golf Club took part in take a kid to the golf course week. This was a very successful week and we had approximately 45 kids take part in the program. The program is designed to introduce and promote the game of golf to children under the age of 18 and have them visit the golf course with a parent or guardian. In the end we hope the program with keep introduce and keep kids interested in golf and hopefully return as members in the future.

The McDonalds Junior Open was held on July 28 and we had 31 kids registered and after a few cancellations 28 kids participated in the event. The overall low gross winner was Jordan Jakubow with a score of 84 and the overall low net winner was Ethan Redman.

The proshop will be looking for part time reliable staff during September to fill gaps as Kylie, Darren & Vicky will be heading off to school. If you or you know someone who may be interested in part time work please contact Dave Gray at the proshop for details.
